from a N.W. gale, the “Tutanekai” touched very slightly
on a rock which is not marked on the chart, and which
has 12 ft. water on it at low water spring-tides, the chart
showing 84 fathoms close to the danger.
The bearings from the rock are,–
Schooner Point, E. by S., quarter of a mile.
Seventy Fathoms Point, N. ½ E., quarter of a mile.
The rock is one cable’s length from the shore on the
south side of the Sound.
Bearings magnetic.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty charts Nos. 768 and
2591; “New Zealand Pilot,” Chapter ix., pages 372 and
373.

Notice to Mariners, No. 8 of 1898.

EXPLOSIVES WHARF, WESTPORT.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 18th January, 1898.

THE Westport Harbour Board have notified the con-
struction of an explosives wharf, situated on the
eastern side of the Buller River, and about 1,850 ft. below
the coal-staiths at the Port of Westport, which is appointed
by the Board as the place at which all explosives must be
discharged on and after the 1st February, 1898.
Chart, &c., affected: Admiralty chart No. 2616; “New
Zealand Pilot,” Chapter ix., pages 397 to 401.

Approving and appointing a Bonding Warehouse.

CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the powers in me for this
purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation
Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do
hereby approve and appoint the under-mentioned warehouse
to be a warehouse for the reception of goods under bond,
namely,–

Port of Lyttelton.

Part of the top floor of a four-story brick building
fronting Packer’s Right-of-way, between Cashel and
Lichfield Streets, on Sections 893 and 894 of the City of
Christchurch, to be known as

WARDELL’S BOND.

Given under my hand, at Wellington, this nineteenth
day of January, one thousand eight hundred and
ninety-eight.

generally fine bright weather, though strong winds prevailed
from north-west. Maximum temperature in shade 76°·8,
minimum 42°; mean temperature of dew-point, 48°·8; mean
humidity, 69. Earth-shock on 8th, at 2·41 a.m., prolonged,
S. to N; also on 27th, at 8 p.m., slight.
