Notice to Local Authorities under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886.”

PURSUANT to section 16 of “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” the Colonial Treasurer hereby gives notice that on Wednesday, the 1st June, 1898, he will be prepared to consider applications from local authorities for loans under the Act.

Applications should be addressed to the Colonial Treasurer, and must be posted so as to arrive at the Treasury on or before the 31st May, 1898.

Special Order made by the Cook County Council, constituting the Aroha Road District.

THE following special order, made by the Cook County Council, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Counties Act, 1886.”

COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

A SPECIAL order made by the Cook County Council, on Friday, 18th February, 1898, and confirmed at a subsequent meeting held on Saturday, 19th March, 1898:—

Resolved,—

“That a new road district be formed from parts of an outlying district within the Arai Riding of Cook County, to be called the ‘Aroha Road District,’ the boundaries to be those described in the accompanying Schedule.

“2. That the number of members for the Aroha Road District be four.”

The common seal of the Chairman, Councillors, and inhabitants of the County of Cook was hereto affixed in the presence of—

I hereby certify that the foregoing special order has been made in accordance with law, and that all the provisions of the Road Boards Acts and Counties Act have been complied with.

Schedule referred to in Special Order of Cook County Council, 19th March, 1898.—Boundaries of the Aroha Road District.

Commencing at the north-eastern corner of Section 122, Block II., Patutahi Survey District; thence westerly by the northern boundary of that section and Education Reserve to Poha; thence south-westerly by the north-western boundary of the said reserve to the Hangaroa-Matawai No. 2 Block; thence north-westerly by the north-eastern boundaries of the Hangaroa-Matawai No. 2 Block, Section 2, Block IV., Section 1, Block III., Hangaroa Survey District, Section 1, Block XV., and Section 1, Block XIV., Ngatapa Survey District, to the north-western corner of the last-mentioned section; thence north-easterly by the eastern boundaries of the Hangaroa-Matawai Block and the Wharekopae No. 1a Block, to the Wharekopae River; thence easterly by that river to the southern boundary of the Okahuatui No. 1 Block; thence south-easterly by that boundary and the southern boundary of Okahuatui No. 1b Block to the Mangatoetoe Stream; thence southerly by the Mangatoetoe Stream to the western boundary of Section 120, Block II., Patutahi Survey District; thence south-westerly by the north-western boundary of that section to point of commencement.

Order in Council giving Effect to Additional Act of 1896, in re International Union for Protection of Literary and Artistic Works.

SIR,—With reference to my circular despatch of the 15th December last, enclosing a parliamentary paper containing an additional Act, signed at Paris on the 4th May, 1896, modifying certain articles of the Convention concerning the creation of an International Union for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works signed at Berne on the 9th September, 1886, I have the honour to transmit to you, for information and publication in the colony under your government, copies of an Order of Her Majesty in Council for giving effect to the additional Act of Paris above referred to.

THE QUEEN’S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY,
LORD PRESIDENT, EARL OF KINTORE, LORD JAMES OF HEREFORD.

WHEREAS on the 9th day of September, 1886, a Convention (hereinafter called “the Berne Convention”) with respect to the protection to be given by way of copyright to the authors of literary and artistic works was concluded between Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the foreign countries following, that is to say: Belgium, France, Germany, Hayti, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Tunis:

And whereas on the 5th day of September, 1887, the ratifications of the said Convention were duly exchanged between Her Majesty the Queen and the aforesaid countries:

And whereas by an Order in Council dated the 28th day of November, 1887, and made under the authority committed to Her Majesty by the International Copyright Acts, 1844 to 1886, Her Majesty was pleased to make provision for giving rights of copyright throughout Her Majesty’s dominions to the authors of literary and artistic works first produced in any of the said foreign countries (therein referred to as “the foreign countries of the Copyright Union”), and otherwise giving effect throughout Her Majesty’s dominions to the terms of the said Berne Convention, and an English translation of the said Convention was set out in the First Schedule to the Order in Council now in recital:

And whereas, since the date of the said Order in Council hereinbefore recited, the foreign countries following—namely, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, and Norway—have acceded to the said Berne Convention, and by Orders in Coun-
