  1. For preparing the rolls for ridings within the County of Wairoa: Until the 22nd June, 1898.

  2. Time for which such rolls shall be open for inspection: From the 27th June, 1898, to the 15th July, 1898.

  3. Time for appeals against the said rolls: Until the 31st July, 1898.

  4. Revision Courts may sit for hearing applications with reference to the said rolls, and adjourn: Until the 20th August, 1898.

  5. Time when the said rolls, having been duly corrected and signed, shall come into force: On the 1st September, 1898.

WHEREAS it has been made to appear that owing to unavoidable circumstances the preparation of the rolls for the County of Inangahua, and the taking of certain steps consequent on such preparation, cannot be made and taken within the times limited by “The Counties Act, 1886,” and it is expedient to extend the said times respectively:

IN pursuance of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one-hundred-and-thirteenth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, James Prendergast, Knight, Chief Justice, in the name and on behalf of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, and as his duly appointed Deputy, do hereby appoint Wednesday, the thirteenth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight, as the time at which the lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be sold by public auction at Pahiatua; and I do hereby fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold as those mentioned in the said Schedule hereto following the description of such lands respectively.

Amendment of Regulations for Conduct of Election of Members of the Boards of Governors of the Canterbury College and of the Canterbury Agricultural College.

WHEREAS, in exercise of the powers in that behalf conferred upon the Governor by “The Canterbury College and Canterbury Agricultural College Act, 1896,” His Excellency Sir James Prendergast, the Administrator of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, did on the twenty-ninth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven, make certain regulations for the proper conduct of all elections of members of the respective Boards of Governors of the Canterbury College and the Canterbury Agricultural College: And whereas the said regulations were gazetted on the twenty-ninth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven (page 957): And whereas it is expedient that the said regulations should be amended in manner herein-after appearing:

Now, therefore, I, James Prendergast, Knight, Chief Justice, in the name and on behalf of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, and as his duly appointed Deputy, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by the said Act, and of all other powers and authorities me enabling in this behalf, do hereby amend the said regulations in manner following, that is to say,——

  1. For the purposes of clause sixteen of the said regulations a casual vacancy shall be deemed to occur on the day on which the Board of Governors is apprised of the fact.

  2. The advertisement prescribed by clause seventeen of the said regulations shall state the day and hour for the closing of nominations, as also of every roll relating to the election; and the first advertisement shall appear not later than the seventeenth day before the day of the election.

  3. The interval prescribed by sub-clause two of clause eighteen of the said regulations as that which must elapse between each issue of the therein-mentioned newspaper and the next shall be not less than two days, instead of not less than four.

  4. The form of voting-paper prescribed in clause twenty-five of the said regulations is hereby amended by omitting the third paragraph of the directions, and substituting in lieu thereof the following direction:—

“This voting-paper must be signed by the voter and enclosed in a sealed envelope, and if posted to the Returning Officer must be posted on or before the day of the election, or if delivered to him must be delivered before the day of the election or not later than five o’clock in the afternoon of that day.”

  1. With respect to the vote to be given by a School Committee, the Professorial Board, or an Agricultural and Pastoral Society at the meeting referred to in clauses twenty-six, twenty-seven, and twenty-eight of the said regulations, such meeting may be held at any time on or before the day of the election.

  2. Clause twenty-nine of the said regulations is hereby revoked, and the following is substituted in lieu thereof:—

“29A. The voting-paper, if delivered to the Returning Officer, must be delivered in a sealed envelope before the day of the election, or not later than five o’clock on the afternoon of that day; and, if posted to him, must be posted in a sealed envelope on or before that day.”

  1. Clause thirty-one of the said regulations, prescribing the cases in which the voting-paper shall be informal, is hereby amended by repealing subclauses three and four thereof, and substituting in lieu thereof the following sub-clauses:—
