OTHER CROPS.
A decrease in the area is shown in the following: Rye, 1,015 acres; peas, 696 acres; beans, 926 acres; vetches or tares, 248 acres; linseed, 928 acres: while there is an increase in maize, 2,316 acres; hops, 99 acres; other kinds of crops, 73 acres.
Attention was drawn last year to the decrease in the area under linseed, and it is to be regretted that a further decrease is shown this year. The demand for the seed should be an incentive to growers to try this crop.
GRASSES, CLOVERS, ETC.
The following show a decrease:—
Grasses “for feeding down,” land ploughed .. .. 137,303 acres
Clovers .. .. .. .. .. 5,149 "
Grass for hay, land ploughed .. .. 31,728 "
surface-sown .. .. 9,970 "
Clover for ensilage, land ploughed .. .. 16 "
Rye-grass for seed, .. .. 8,678 "
White clover for seed, .. .. 1,142 "
Red clover .. .. .. .. 3,480 "
Other kinds .. land not ploughed .. .. 1,495 "
——————
Total .. .. .. .. .. 198,961 "
While the under-noted show an increase:—
Surface-sown grasses “for feeding down” .. .. 11,338 acres
Clovers for hay, land ploughed .. .. 97 "
Grasses for ensilage, land ploughed .. .. 155 "
Surface-sown grasses for ensilage .. .. 231 "
Rye-grass for seed, land not ploughed .. .. 2,027 "
Cocksfoot .. .. .. .. 7,976 "
land ploughed .. .. 1,042 "
Other kinds for seed, land ploughed .. .. 786 "
——————
Total .. .. .. .. .. 23,652 "
The large decrease is partly accounted for by the increase in the areas under cereals and green crops. In Canterbury the area under rye-grass and clovers is very much less than last year: no doubt the dry weather is mainly responsible for the decrease. Under the heading of “Tussock and Native Grasses” there is an increase of 935,339 acres: the unoccupied Crown lands taken up during the year will account for this increase.
