"The Agricultural and Pastoral Statistics Act, 1895."
Department of Agriculture, Wellington, 30th April, 1898.
IN the New Zealand Gazette of the 27th January there appeared an interim return showing the areas under corn crops on the 15th November last. The following figures give the complete returns, including areas under grasses, green crops, &c., also number of horses, cattle, and swine at same date, and sheep on the 30th April last (1897).
All holdings of 1 acre and over are taken, as also orchards of ¼ acre and over on holdings under 1 acre.
An estimate of the probable yields of wheat, oats, and barley was made at the time the interim return was gazetted, but as the weather from that date up to harvesting continued most unfavourable the estimate will not be realised. In Canterbury and North Otago the season has been extremely dry, while in the southern portion of Otago the spring was cold and wet, thus delaying the sowing of the crops considerably; consequently many of them are very backward, and, indeed, large areas will only be fit for cutting for chaff.
In the interim return a deduction of 20,000 acres was made from the areas returned under wheat and oats for threshing, and 2,000 acres from barley. Owing, however, to the continued unfavourable weather a much larger deduction must be made. The areas have therefore been increased to 30,000 acres for wheat and oats.
Following the plan adopted with the deductions made last year, they have been apportioned to the areas for chaffing and for feeding down; the totals under these headings are increased accordingly.
As the threshing progresses a few of the average actual yields in each riding of every county are being obtained, and from these an estimate will be struck for the total yields. This will be published as soon as possible.
