boundaries of the Ngakoroa Block to the Muhunga Block; thence by the north-eastern boundary of the latter block to its northernmost corner; thence by a line due west to the middle of the Waipaoa River; thence by a line in a northerly direction along the middle of that river to the confluence of the Waipaoa River with the Waikohu River; thence by a line along the middle of the said Waikohu River to its confluence with the Rangiriri Stream; thence by that stream to the eastern corner of the Motu Block; thence by the eastern boundary of that block to the Motu River; and thence by the Whakatane County to the place of commencement.
Tolago Riding (Amended Boundaries).
All that area in Cook County, in the Hawke’s Bay Land District, bounded towards the north generally by the Waiapu County, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 63, 22nd July, 1897: towards the east generally by the sea: and towards the south-west generally by the south-western and western boundaries of Whangara Block from the sea to the Waiomoku Block; thence by the Waiomoku Blocks and the Waimata North Blocks to the Mangarara Stream; thence by that stream to the north-western corner of Run No. 58; thence by a right line to Trig. Station No. 134; thence by a right line to Trig. Station No. 168; thence by a right line to Trig. Station No. 170; thence by a right line running in the direction of Trig. Station No. 178 (Tutamoe) to the eastern boundary of Waipaoa No. 2 Block, and by that block to the Waiapu County aforesaid.

SPECIAL ORDER made by the Upper Hurford Road Board at a Special Meeting held on the 28th December, 1897.
THAT for the purpose of providing interest and other annual charges on a loan of £700, to form and metal the Hurford Road, commencing at the Tapuae River, and continuing in a southerly direction, to be raised under “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886,” “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” and Acts amending the same, a special rate of 1½d. in the pound on the rateable value be made and levied on all rateable properties in the Upper Hurford Road District, comprising the following sections—Sections Nos. 80, 92, 101, 102, 109, 110, 98, 28, 78, and 114, Omata District, Paritutu Survey District; Sections Nos. 106, 103, 104, 105, 120, 111, 112, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 121, 132, and 133, Omata District, Egmont Survey District, County of Taranaki—such rate to be an annually-recurring rate for twenty-six years, and payable in two equal instalments on the 1st day of the months of January and July in each year; the first year’s interest and cost of raising the loan to be paid out of the loan.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true copy of special order that has been duly made and passed by the Upper Hurford Road Board as required by the Road Boards Act.

RESULT of a poll taken at the Town Hall, Urenui, on Thursday, 23rd December, 1897, on a proposal to raise a loan of £200, under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” for the purpose of purchasing land for road purposes, forming and fencing same through Section 2, Block VII., Waitara Survey District:—
Total number of ratepayers on special roll, 5; total number of votes exercisable, 7: Number of ratepayers who voted for the proposal, 4, capable of exercising 6 votes; number of ratepayers who did not vote, 1, capable of exercising 1 vote.
I therefore declare the proposal carried.

Public Notice.—“The Kapiti Island Public Reserve Act, 1897.”
THE attention of the public is called to the following provisions of the above-mentioned Act, which was passed on the 22nd day of December, 1897:—

All estates and interests, whether freehold or lesser estate, in any lands forming part of the said island, held or acquired by any person or persons other than the original Native owners or their heirs or successors according to Native custom, shall, upon the passing of this Act, vest in Her Majesty, upon and subject to such terms as to compensation and otherwise as by this Act are provided.

All persons claiming to have heretofore acquired any valid estate or interest in the said lands or any part thereof, as evidenced by any deed or instrument, shall register such deed or instrument at the office of the District Land Registrar, Wellington, within three calendar months from the date of the passing of this Act; or, if such registration is not permissible or feasible, then the deed or instrument, together with a certified copy thereof, shall be deposited with such Registrar within the said period of three months.

No claim for compensation shall be entertained until proof of such registration or deposit be given.

STEWART ISLAND, PATERSON INLET—SUNKEN ROCKY PATCH, CODFISH ISLAND; ALSO SUNKEN ROCK, KAPIPI BAY.

Wellington, N.Z., 4th January, 1898.
CODFISH ISLAND.—A rocky patch extending over an area of 60 ft., carrying 3 ft. of water at low tide, lies one-third of a mile off shore on the south-east side of the island.
From this danger High Rock bears N.E. by N., distant one mile.
KAPIPI BAY.—A pinnacle rock, carrying 3½ fathoms of water at low tide, with deep water all round, lies 1½ cables’ length to the eastward of the point on the south side of the bay.
Caution.—Vessels should not attempt to pass on the inside of either of these dangers.
Note.—All bearings are correct magnetic, and the soundings are calculated for low-water springs.
Charts, &c., affected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 2553 and 2541; New Zealand Pilot, Chapter viii., pages 340 and 348.
