from the Canterbury District Reserve Corps to the South Canterbury Battalion of Infantry Volunteers, as Quartermaster. Commission to date from the 21st October, 1897.

Revised Dress Regulations, New Zealand Forces.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to make and sign the under-mentioned revised dress regulations for certain branches of the New Zealand Defence Forces, to come into force on and after the 1st day of November, 1897.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authority conferred upon me by “The Defence Act, 1886,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby make the regulations hereinafter set forth, that is to say,—

From and after the date when these regulations come into force any Volunteer corps enrolled under the provisions of “The Defence Act, 1886,” and being a mounted corps, a garrison artillery corps, a field artillery corps, an engineer corps, or an infantry corps, will be allowed to adopt such uniform as they respectively think fit, in accordance with these regulations.

Previous to such adoption, the commanding officer of the corps shall transmit to the Commander of the Forces a specification in writing setting forth in detail all particulars of the uniform which such corps desires to adopt.

The Commander of the Forces may make such modification in, or addition to, any such specification as he sees fit, and, subject thereto, may approve of such specification; and, after such approval shall have been notified to the commanding officer of the corps, the uniform so approved shall be deemed to have been adopted by the corps.

All existing regulations in force which are repugnant to these present regulations shall be deemed to be and the same are hereby revoked.

This and the foregoing regulations shall come into force on and after the first day of November next ensuing.

Proposed Loan of £10,000.
RESULT of poll taken on 23rd October, 1897:—
Number of ratepayers on roll, 92, representing 136 votes: Number of ratepayers voting in favour, 68; number of votes recorded in favour, 96; number of ratepayers voting against, 2; number of votes recorded against, 3; number of ratepayers not voting, 22; number of votes not recorded, 36; informal, 1.
A majority in number of ratepayers, being entitled to a majority in number of the votes which can be exercised by the whole number of ratepayers, having voted in favour of the proposal, I therefore declare such proposal to be duly carried.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the Borough of Invercargill, is published in accordance with the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886.”

BOROUGH OF INVERCARGILL.—ABATTOIR LOAN.
I HEREBY give notice that, at the poll taken on Thursday, the 21st day of October, 1897, on the proposal of the Invercargill Borough Council to raise by way of loan the sum of £5,000 for the purpose of erecting or providing an abattoir under the provisions of “The Abattoirs and Slaughterhouses Act, 1894,” and to pledge as security for such loan the land and buildings used for the purpose of such abattoir, and the tolls, rents, stallages, and other revenues to be derived from such abattoir, as defined by the aforesaid Act, the following votes were recorded:—
For the proposal, 508; against the proposal, 102: majority in favour of the proposal, 406.
I therefore declare the proposal carried.

In the matter of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and its amendments, and in the matter of a loan of £5,000 proposed to be raised by the Corporation of the Borough of Invercargill for the purposes of purchasing a site for and erecting an abattoir thereon.
I, JOSIAH ALFRED HANAN, of Invercargill, in the Colony of New Zealand, solicitor, do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:—

I am Mayor of the Borough of Invercargill.

The Council of the said Borough of Invercargill is desirous of borrowing the sum of £5,000 for the purpose of acquiring a site for and erecting an abattoir thereon.

By the order of the Council of the said borough, I published in the Southland Times, a newspaper circulating in the said borough, on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th days of September, and the 6th day of October, 1897, being once in each week for four successive weeks, a notice a copy of which is hereunto annexed, and marked A.*

In pursuance of the said notice, a meeting of the burgesses of the said borough was held on the 8th day of October, 1897, being a day not more than ten days after the last publication of such notice, to consider the said proposal, and I presided at such meeting; and after due consideration and discussion of the proposal I gave notice that a poll would be taken thereon.

After such notice had been published, and before the poll was taken thereon, a special roll was made up by the Town Clerk of the said borough in accordance with the provisions of section 180 of “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and the said special roll was signed by myself, as such Mayor as aforesaid, and by two Councillors of the said borough.

As such Mayor as aforesaid I published a notice in the Southland Times, a newspaper so circulating as aforesaid, a copy of which is hereto annexed, and marked B.*

As such Mayor I gave the Returning Officer notice in writing, requiring him to take the poll on the day appointed for the same by the said notice.

The said poll was taken on the said day, in accordance with the provisions in that behalf provided by “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and the votes given for the said proposal were 508, and those against it were 102; and I gave public notice of the number of votes recorded for and against the proposal, as provided by “The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,” and declared the resolution carried.
And I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of the provisions of “The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882.”
