HIS Excellency the Governor will hold a levée at
Government House on Thursday, 12th August, 1897,
at 12 o'clock. Full dress.

Gentlemen attending the levée will wear uniform or even-
ing dress. Those having cards for the private entrée are
requested to attend not later than 11.45 a.m. Each gentle-
man is requested to bring two cards, on each of which his
name must be distinctly written: one of these cards is to be
given up in the hall, and the other is to be handed to the
officer announcing the names to His Excellency.

THE following special order, made by the Moa Road
Board, is published in accordance with the provisions
of "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

Moa Road Board.

  1. THAT, to secure the repayment of a loan of £225 raised
    under "The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,"
    for the purpose of forming and metalling the Hursthouse
    Road, and erect a bridge on same, and to form a portion of
    the Lepper Road south of the Hursthouse Road starting
    from the junction of the Hursthouse and Lepper Roads,
  2. A special rate of 5d. in the pound be made and levied
    over the following lands, which are hereby constituted the
    Hursthouse and Lepper Roads Special Rating District:—
    Sections 133 (in two subdivisions), 134 (in three sub-
    divisions), 135 (in four subdivisions), 136, 137 (in two sub-
    divisions), 140, 100 (in two subdivisions), Tarurutangi; and
    part 99, Moa.
    Such rate to be an annual-recurring rate for twenty-six
    years, and to be payable in two half-yearly instalments, on
    the 1st day of January and the 1st day of July in each
    year.

Commission appointing Lord Ranfurly to be Governor of
New Zealand.

THE following Commission, appointing the Right
Honourable the Earl of Ranfurly, K.C.M.G., to be

Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony of New
Zealand and its dependencies, is published for general in-
formation.

Commission passed under the Royal Sign-manual and Signet,
appointing the Right Honourable the Earl of Ranfurly to
be Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony of
New Zealand and its Dependencies.
VICTORIA R.

Victoria, by the grace of God of the United Kingdom
of Great Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the
Faith, Empress of India. To our right trusty and
right well-beloved cousin Uchter John Mark, Earl of
Ranfurly: Greeting.

We do by this our Commission under our Sign-manual and
Signet appoint you, the said Uchter John Mark, Earl of
Ranfurly, to be during our pleasure our Governor and Com-
mander-in-Chief in and over our Colony of New Zealand
and its dependencies, with all the powers, rights, privileges,
and advantages to the said office belonging or appertaining.
2. And We do hereby authorise, empower, and command
you to exercise and perform all and singular the powers and
directions contained in our Letters Patent under the Great
Seal of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland,
bearing date at Westminster, the 21st day of February, 1879,
or in any other our Letters Patent adding to, amending,
or substituted for the same, according to such orders and
instructions as our said Governor and Commander-in-Chief
for the time being hath already received from Us, and to
such further orders and instructions as you may hereafter
receive from Us.
3. And We do hereby appoint that, so soon as you shall
have taken the prescribed oaths and have entered upon the
duties of your office, this our present Commission shall
supersede our Commission under our Sign-manual and
Signet, bearing date the 24th day of February, 1892, ap-
pointing our right trusty and right well-beloved cousin
David, Earl of Glasgow, Knight Grand Cross of our Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, to
be our Governor and Commander-in-Chief of our said colony
and its dependencies.
4. And We do hereby command all and singular our
officers, Ministers, and loving subjects in our said colony
and its dependencies, and all others whom it may concern,
to take due notice hereof, and to give their ready obedience
accordingly.
Given at our Court at Saint James's, this 6th day of
April, 1897, in the sixtieth year of our reign.

New Zealand Hemp.—Notice No. 478.

mentioned in Notice No. 430 has been extended to
31st December, 1897.

Bonuses for Encouragement of New Zealand Hemp (Phor-
mium tenax) Industry.—Notice No. 430.

Wellington, 1st November, 1895.
Bonus No. 1.

A BONUS of £1,750 is offered for a machine or process
for dressing New Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax)
which shall be an improvement on the machines or processes
now in use, and which shall, after trial, be found to mate-
rially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or
increase the quantity of dressed fibre.
The following are the conditions:—

  1. All applications for the bonus must be sent addressed
    to the Hon. the Minister for Agriculture, Wellington, and
    must reach him not later than the 31st December, 1897.
    Each application must be accompanied by a description of the
    machine or process, particularly stating improvements on
    present machines or processes, and also the cost at which
    the machine or process can be supplied.
  2. The applicants must be prepared to submit their
    machines or processes to examination at such time and
    place as the Government may direct.
  3. The Government shall appoint a committee of three or
    more experts, to whom all applications shall be submitted.
    Such committee shall, after perusal, state what machines or
    processes they deem worthy of consideration, and may in-
    spect the same at any place within the colony; and, having
    so inspected the whole or any of them, may direct that the
    whole or any of them be brought for further trial to such
    place as they may think fit.
