MANUKAU HARBOUR.—ENTRANCE TO SOUTH CHANNEL.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 20th April, 1897.
THE Harbourmaster at Manukau reports that the depth of water off the Heron Spit, and in line of the leading beacons, has shoaled to 2 fathoms at low-water springs. Masters of vessels drawing 12 ft. and over should therefore not attempt to cross the South Channel bar until three-quarter flood.

Notice to Mariners, No. 5 of 1897.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st April, 1897.
THE following notices, extracted from the Notices to Mariners issued by the Board of Trade, London, on the 1st ultimo, are published for general information.
WM. HALL-JONES.
NEW ZEALAND.
North Island.
Vision Rock.—This rock has been searched for unsuccess. on several occasions; and recently H.M.S. “Penguin” sounded over an area of 120 square miles in the reported locality of Vision Rock, in approx. 35° 35½' S., 175° 1½' E., about 15 miles E. by S. from the Nrn. of the Tawhiti Rahi (Poor Knights), and found no indic. of a danger, the least depth obtained being 160 fms. amongst general depths of 180 fms. During the search, with the wind against the current, a strong tide-ripple was obser. from a dist. that would have led any one to believe that a shoal existed; but on sounding over the spot no irregularity whatever was found in the depth. Vision Rock has consequently been expunged from the Admiralty charts. March.
FIJI ISLANDS.
REPORTED REEFS.—1. Balmoral Reef is 2½ miles long, N.W. and S.E., and 1¾ miles broad, with a least depth of 4 fms. near its Ern. edge, in approx. 15° 40¼' S., 175° 52¼' E., and with general depths of 5 to 7 fms. 2. Hamond Reef, reported as lying in 15° 32' S., 175° 20' E., has been unsucc. searched for, the depths in the locality being 1,600 to 1,700 fms. As this danger is believed to be identical with Balmoral Reef, it has been expunged from the Admiralty charts. 3. Carter Reef, reported as lying in 15° 42' S., 176° 28' E., has been unsucc. searched for, the depths being 1,600 to 1,800 fms. around its position. This danger has been expunged from the Admiralty charts, as it is believed to be merely another position given of Balmoral Reef. 4. The reef reported to lie in approx. 17° 57¼' S., 177° 10½' E., 2½ miles S.W. from Navula Passage, has also been unsucc. searched for, and this danger has been expunged from the Admiralty charts. March.
VITI LEVU.—SUVA HARB.—1. A depth of 5 ft. lie in approx. 18° 8' 10" S., 178° 24' 50" E., 3¾ cables N. 84° E. from the Lt.-V. This is on the N.W. side of the patch prev. marked 2 fms. on the chart. 2. A coral patch, carrying 4½ fms., lies with Steamer pier Lt.-H., E. ½ N., 5⁹⁄₁₀ cables, and Low cliffy pt., N. ⅔ W. 3. A coral patch, carrying 6 fms., lies with Steamer pier Lt.-H., E. ½ S., 7 cables, and Low cliffy pt., N. ½ E. March.
