And whereas, by the forty-third section of the said Act,
it is enacted, among other things, that the Governor, by
Order in Council notified in the Gazette, may extend the
time allowed for the holding of any election or meeting of
the Board, whether the day may have passed on which the
same ought to have been held or not: And whereas it is
expedient that the neglect to hold such election as aforesaid
should be remedied:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the
Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of all
powers enabling him in this behalf, and with the advice and
consent of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth
hereby extend the time for holding the election of members
of the Wakanui River Board to the twenty-second day of
February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven,
and doth hereby order and declare that such election shall
take place at the school-room at Wakanui; that Alfred
Augustus Fooks shall be the Returning Officer to conduct
such election; and that the first meeting of the said Board
shall take place at the River Board Office, at Ashburton,
on the third day of April next, at the hour of two in the
afternoon; and, lastly, that the provisions of “The Regu-
lation of Local Elections Act, 1876,” so far as applicable,
shall extend to the election to be held hereunder.

Vesting a Reserve in the Geraldine Road Board.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this twentieth
day of January, 1897.

THE HONOURABLE R. J. SEDDON PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS the land mentioned in the Schedule hereto
was permanently reserved for the accommodation of
travelling stock by notification in the New Zealand Gazette of
the eighth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and
ninety-six: And whereas, in the opinion of the Governor,
it is expedient that the said land should be vested in the
Geraldine Road Board:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, acting by and with the advice and consent
of the Executive Council of the said colony, and in exercise
of the powers and authorities vested in him by the fourth
section of “The Public Reserves Act, 1881,” doth hereby
declare that, from and after the day of the date hereof, the
reserve mentioned in the Schedule hereto shall become vested
in “The Inhabitants of the Geraldine Road District,” in
trust, as a reserve for the accommodation of travelling stock.

SCHEDULE.

All that parcel of land in the Canterbury Land District,
containing by admeasurement 3 acres and 15 perches, more
or less, being Reserve No. 3096 (formerly the sections com-
prising Block I., Town of South Rangitata), Block III.,
Geraldine Survey District. Bounded towards the north-
west by a road-line, 500 links; towards the north-east by
Clogstown Street, 588·4 links; towards the south-east by a
road-line, 504 links; and towards the south-west by Mellish
Street, 652·6 links: be all the aforesaid linkages more or
less; as the same is delineated on the plan deposited in the
office of the Chief Surveyor, Christchurch.

Parcel Post to the United Kingdom.—Reducing Rates of
Postage.

At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this twentieth
day of January, 1897.

THE HONOURABLE R. J. SEDDON PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS by Order in Council made under the pro-
visions of “The Post Office Act 1881 Amendment
Act, 1886,” and “The Post Office (Foreign Parcels) Act,
1888,” and issued on the tenth day of April, one thousand
eight hundred and ninety-three, certain rates of postage were
prescribed for the transmission of parcels through the post
respectively within the colony to the United Kingdom, to
foreign places by way of the United Kingdom, and to certain
of the Australian Colonies, and Tasmania: And whereas it
is expedient to reduce the rates of postage for parcels de-
spatched from New Zealand to the United Kingdom:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor of the Colony
of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers
and authorities conferred by “The Post Office Act 1881
Amendment Act, 1886,” and “The Post Office (Foreign
Parcels) Act, 1888,” and by and with the advice and consent
of the Executive Council of the said colony, doth hereby
order and declare that the rates of postage specified in the
Schedule hereto shall hereafter be levied on all parcels de-
spatched from New Zealand to the United Kingdom as
aforesaid: And in exercise of the like powers and autho-
rities His Excellency doth hereby declare that the above-
recited Order in Council of the tenth day of April, one thou-
sand eight hundred and ninety-three, shall be and the same
is hereby altered and varied in so far as may be necessary to
give effect to the provisions of this present Order.

“The Education Act, 1877.”—Payments to Education
Boards.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this twentieth
day of January, 1897.

THE HONOURABLE R. J. SEDDON PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

IN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities
vested in him by “The Education Act, 1877,” His
Excellency the Governor, with the advice and consent of
the Executive Council of the colony, doth hereby make the
regulation hereto annexed regarding certain payments of
capitation allowance to Education Boards; and, with the
like advice and consent, doth hereby prescribe that this
Order shall come into force on the date of the first publica-
tion thereof in the New Zealand Gazette.

REGULATION.

Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in
an Order in Council made on the 5th day of January, 1888,
under the provisions of “The Education Act, 1877,” relating
(inter alia) to attendance registers and returns, the payment
of capitation allowance to Education Boards for the quarter
ending on the 31st day of March, 1897, shall be according to
the working-average attendance of the quarter ending on
the 31st day of December, 1896, as working average was
defined by Order in Council dated the 5th day of July, 1887,
and made under the provisions of the before-mentioned Act.

Conferring Jurisdiction on Native Land Court.

ORDER IN COUNCIL.
At the Government Buildings, at Wellington, this twentieth
day of January, 1897.

Present:

THE HONOURABLE R. J. SEDDON PRESIDING IN COUNCIL.

WHEREAS by section fourteen of “The Native Land
Court Act, 1894,” it is enacted that the Native Land
Court shall, as regards all lands within the meaning of sub-
section ten of section fourteen aforesaid, have jurisdiction
as in the said subsection mentioned: Provided that the
Court shall not proceed to exercise such jurisdiction unless
the Governor in Council shall by order authorise the same
to be done:

And whereas the land specified in the Schedule hereto is
land in respect whereof the Court has jurisdiction as afore-
said, and it is expedient that the Court should be authorised
to exercise the same:
