THE following special order, made by the Upper Taueru
Road Board, is published in accordance with the pro-
visions of "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

Copy SPECIAL ORDER made by the Upper Taueru Road Board
1st May, confirmed 5th June, 1897.

THAT, to meet the interest and annual charges on a loan of
£300 for the formation of Wilton and Paulson's Road,
a special rate of 1⅜d. in the pound be now levied on
the rateable value for the time being of the following pro-
perties—Sections 205, 150, 149, 148, 147, 141, Block VIII.,
all in the Kopuaranga Survey District—as security for a
loan of £300 under "The Government Loans to Local Bodies
Act, 1886"; such rate to be an annually-recurring rate for
the period of twenty-six years.

I hereby certify that the copy of special order attached
has been duly passed by the Upper Taueru Road Board, as
required by section 75 of "The Road Boards Act, 1882."

Result of Poll for Proposed Loan, Borough of Petone.

THE following notice, received from the Mayor of the
Borough of Petone, is published in accordance with
the provisions of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886."

BOROUGH OF PETONE.

Result of Poll.

I HEREBY give public notice that the result of the poll taken
on the 15th day of December, 1897, under the provisions of
"The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886," and "The Petone
Corporation Loan Empowering Act, 1892," upon the pro-
posal of the Petone Borough Council to raise a sum of
£2,000, by way of special loan, for purposes of drainage and
street-improvement, was as follows:—

In favour of proposal, 305 votes, representing £11,599 5s.
of rateable value; against the proposal, two votes, repre-
senting £57 15s. of rateable value. Half the annual rateable
value of the borough is £8,952 15s.

As the number of votes given in favour of the proposal
is not less than two-thirds of the total number of votes
given at the poll, and represents not less than one-half of
the rateable value of the borough, I hereby declare the said
proposal to have been carried.

In the matter of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,"
and of "The Petone Corporation Loan Empowering Act,
1892."

I, Richard Clement Kirk, Mayor of the Borough of
Petone, solemnly and sincerely declare that all proceed-
ings required by "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1886,"
and "The Petone Corporation Loan Empowering Act,
1892," to be taken in or towards obtaining the sanction
of the burgesses to the proposal of the Petone Borough
Council to raise a special loan of £2,000 for purposes of
drainage and street-improvement have been duly taken,
and that the resolution in favour of the proposal has been
duly carried. And I make this solemn declaration con-
scientiously believing the same to be true, and by virtue of
"The Justices of the Peace Act, 1882."

Issue of New Zealand War Medals.

prove of the issue of the New Zealand War Medal
to the under-mentioned members of the New Zealand

Colonial Forces, whose claims have been investigated and
admitted:—
No. 801, Private Anthony Wilkinson, Taranaki Military
Settlers;
Private John Foreman, Taranaki Rifle Volunteers;
Private Thomas Allardice, New Zealand (Hawke's Bay)
Militia;
No. 576, Lance-Corporal Lewis Rees, Taranaki Military
Settlers.

Notice to Mariners, No. 26 of 1897.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR.—TEMPORARY LIGHTS, OUTER EASTERN
TEE, QUEEN STREET WHARF.

Wellington, N.Z., 22nd December, 1897.

THE Auckland Harbour Board have notified that, until
the sheds on the Outer Eastern Tee, Queen Street
Wharf, Auckland, which were recently destroyed by fire,
are re-erected, the following temporary lights will be ex-
hibited:—
Three bright lights in the form of a triangle will be shown
from the end of the tee, the upper light of the triangle
being 23 ft. 9 in. above the deck of the tee.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force
upon the New Zealand Government Railways.

IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me
under "The Public Works Act, 1894," and any amend-
ment thereof, and also of "The Government Railways Act,
1894," I, Alfred Jerome Cadman, the Minister for Railways,
do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of
fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand
Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to
come into force on and after the 5th day of January,
1898:—

PART I.—PASSENGERS: LOCAL FARES AND
REGULATIONS.

WELLINGTON—NAPIER—NEW PLYMOUTH SECTION.

For the purpose of computing fares for passengers
conveyed over the Government railway, the distance
between any two stations shall be determined on the
basis of the shorter railway route, provided that the
fare as determined under this regulation shall in no
case exceed the through fare chargeable via the Welling-
ton and Manawatu Railway Company's line.
The fare from and to Wellington—Hayward's and inter-
mediate stations to and from Woodville—Makakahi and
intermediate stations shall not exceed the fare Welling-
ton to Woodville.
For the purpose of computing fares between Te
Aro and stations Woodville—Makakahi, inclusive, the
distance will be deemed to be 106 miles.
Return tickets between Wellington and Napier will
be available for return for two months from date of
issue.

Insert:

For the purpose of computing fares for passengers
conveyed over the Government railway, the distance
between any two stations shall be determined on the
basis of the shorter railway route, provided that—
(a.) The fares from Wellington—Silverstream and
intermediate stations to Ashurst—Makino Road—Foxton
and intermediate stations shall not be less than the
fares to Woodville.
(b.) The fares from Makino Road—Foxton—Ashurst
and intermediate stations to Silverstream—Wellington
and intermediate stations shall not be less than the
fares from Woodville to any of the latter stations.
(c.) Except where otherwise specified above the fares
as determined by this regulation shall in no case exceed
the through fare chargeable via the Wellington and
Manawatu Railway Company's line.
(d.) The fares from and to Wellington—Hayward's and
intermediate stations to and from Woodville—Makakahi
and intermediate stations shall not exceed the fares
Wellington to Woodville.
For the purpose of computing fares from and to Te
Aro one mile will be added to the distance to or from
Wellington.
Return tickets between Wellington and Napier via
either the Wellington—Manawatu Railway Company's
or the Government line will be available for return for
two months from date of issue.
Return tickets between Te Aro and Napier will be
available for return for two months from date of issue.
