Rural Lands in the Southland Land District open for Sale or Selection.

RANFURLY, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892,” I, Uchter John Mark, Earl of Ranfurly, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the second day of March, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1892.”

This section is situated about a mile from Mandeville Railway-station. The land is open and well-watered, and the soil is fair. Valuation for improvements, £35, consisting of—10 acres in grass, £5; fencing, £20; ditching, £5; and planting, £5.

These sections are situated about twelve miles from Nightcaps Railway-station by fairly good road. Open river-flat land, covered with silver-tussock; shingly formation. Section 299 is burdened with £3 for fencing, and Section 300 with £12 for fencing.

This section is situated about a mile from Mossburn Railway-station, but the access is not very good. Open land; fair soil; shingly formation. Valuation for improvements, £72, consisting of—80 acres ploughing, at 5s. per acre, £20; fencing, £40; grass, £10; and ditching, £2.

This section is covered with mixed bush. Land undulating and broken. Height above sea-level, about 400 ft. Distance from Orepuki Railway-station, about seven miles. Valuation for improvements, £265, consisting of—dwelling-house and other buildings, £70; 35 acres in grass, at £3 per acre, £105; 200 chains fencing, at 6s. per chain, £60; cultivation, £15; and road-making, £15.

Land is low-lying and swampy. About 20 acres on each section is fair land, the balance being peat-bog. Distance from Wright’s Bush Railway-station, about two miles, by good road. Section 30 is burdened with £5 for ditching, and Section 31 with £2 for ditching.

This section is covered with bush of no commercial value; and the soil is fair. Distance from Waianiwa Railway-station, about five miles.

Open, low-lying, swampy land; fair soil. Distance from Kapuka Railway-station, about four miles and a half. Section 8 is burdened with £58 7s. 6d., valuation for improvements, consisting of—145 chains fencing, £54 7s. 6d.; and culverts, £4. Section 9 is burdened with £160 15s., valuation for improvements, consisting of—house and outbuildings, £30; 15 acres in grass, £7 10s.; cultivation, £33; 230 chains fencing, £86 5s.; and culverts, £4.

This section is situated about two miles from Kingston Crossing, on the Waimea Plains line. Open, terrace land; fair soil. This section is burdened with £10, valuation for fencing.

These sections are situated about ten miles from Waikawa Township. Partly bush, and partly open land; well watered. Fair soil; clay formation. Section 18 is burdened with £50 for improvements—ploughing, £30; fencing, £20. Section 21 is burdened with £20 for fencing.

These sections are situated about eleven miles from Invercargill. Open land, well watered; inferior, sandy soil.

These sections are situated about twenty-four miles from Otatau Railway-station. Partly bush and partly open land. Bush consists for the most part of birch, and is of no commercial value. Part of the open land is good, but part is swampy and part is covered with stones. Section 2 is burdened with £48, valuation for improvements, consisting of—fencing, £23; and house, shed, and yard, £25. Section 3 is burdened with £35 for fencing.

This section is situated about thirty miles from Mossburn Railway-station. Open land, fairly well watered; fair soil, gravel formation.
