Rural Lands in the Hawke's Bay Land District open for Sale or Selection.

GLASGOW, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and thirty-sixth section of "The Land Act, 1892," I, David, Earl of Glasgow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection on and after the twenty-fourth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven; and also that the lands mentioned in the said Schedule may, at the option of the applicant, be purchased for cash, or be selected for occupation with right of purchase or on lease in perpetuity, or, in respect of any land containing or supposed to contain any metal, mineral, or valuable stone, be selected on lease in perpetuity only; and I do hereby also fix the prices at which the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased, as mentioned in the said Schedule hereto, and do declare that the said lands shall be sold, occupied, or leased under and subject to the provisions of "The Land Act, 1892."

About half the land is covered with light forest, consisting of tawa, rimu, birch, hinau, and kohekohe, the remainder being open fern and scrub country. Formation mostly papa and sandstone, with light pumice soil in places. The country is undulating and rather broken; well watered, and accessible by a bridle-track about five miles from the dray-road leading to Wairoa. On Section 2, some three years ago, 40 acres of bush was felled, but only a part burnt, and none of it sown. There are a few acres of grass, self-sown, also on the section.

Broken country, light soil; about 18 acres of mixed bush, remainder being fern and scrub. Distant, thirteen miles inland from Tolago Bay.

With the exception of 15 acres felled and burnt in 1894, the section is entirely covered with forest, consisting of rata, hinau, and silver-birch. Hilly and broken country, adapted for pastoral purposes. Light stony soil, poor on tops of spurs; well watered. Distant, about eight miles and a half from the Mangatera Railway-station.
