In the first table are given the deaths and death-rates for each of the four cities, for the suburban boroughs severally, and for each city with its suburban towns. As regards Auckland and Christchurch, the whole of the area usually recognised as suburban has not yet been brought under municipal government, and the vital statistics do not deal with such portions as still remain in road districts. But the omission is not very important, for there are in either case quite enough suburbs included within borough boundaries to give a fair idea of the death-rate of Greater Auckland and Greater Christchurch. As further boroughs are formed the vital statistics will be made to include them.
The inclusion of the suburban boroughs tends to lower the death-rate for last month at Wellington and Christchurch, but raises it at Auckland and Dunedin. The rates for October are,--
| Death-rate per 1,000 of Population. | |
|---|---|
| Auckland City | 0·92 |
| "" and five suburban boroughs | 0·94 |
| Wellington City | 1·18 |
| "" and three suburban boroughs | 1·10 |
| Christchurch City | 0·94 |
| "" and four suburban boroughs | 0·73 |
| Dunedin City | 0·96 |
| "" and eight suburban boroughs | 1·08 |
Including the suburbs, the rate at Wellington is the highest, and at Christchurch the lowest. Compared with October, 1895, the results are,--
| October, 1895. | October, 1896. | |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland and suburbs | 1·19 | 0·94 |
| Wellington and suburbs | 1·19 | 1·10 |
| Christchurch and suburbs | 0·85 | 0·73 |
| Dunedin and suburbs.. | 0·53 | 1·08 |
Specific Febrile and Zymotic Diseases.--The deaths from these causes in the four centres and their suburbs were only 10 in October, against 13 in September and 15 in August. Influenza caused 2 deaths last month, 1 at Wellington and 1 at Dunedin. Diphtheria, 4: 2 at Wellington, and 2 at Dunedin. The mortality from diarrhœal diseases was at a minimum, consisting of one death only, which occurred at Christchurch. The remaining deaths belonging to this class include one (of a child) from congenital syphilis, one from pyæmia, and another from septicæmia.
Constitutional Diseases.--Here the deaths show increase from 33 in September to 44 in October. Phthisis is accountable for 24 deaths in the later month, and cancer contributed 12 deaths.
Local Diseases.--The deaths in this class numbered 85, including 14 from diseases of the nervous system (4 apoplexy, 6 paralysis); 1 from disease of the organs of special sense (otitis); 27 from diseases of the circulatory system (26 heart-disease and syncope); 23 from diseases of the respiratory system (all bronchitis and pneumonia); 10 from diseases of the digestive system; 6 from diseases of the urinary system (4 Bright's); 1 from disease of the reproductive system ; 2 from diseases of the organs of locomotion; and 1 from disease of the integumentary system.
Violent Deaths.--Out of a total of 8 deaths, 6 were accidental and 2 suicidal. A cook was killed by falling out of an hotel-window, and a message-boy by a fall from the banisters of a staircase; another boy was accidentally shot with a pistol; a horse-trainer and a ship's cook were found drowned; an infant died from hæorrhage at the navel. One suicide was that of a woman who took strychnine, and the other that of a labourer who hanged himself; both being cases of temporary insanity.
