HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint
GEORGE VEITCH COCHRANE
to be Returning Officer for the purpose of conducting the first election of five members of the Board of Trustees of the Wainono Land Drainage District, as constituted under "The Land Drainage Act, 1893"; also to appoint Thursday, the 19th day of November, 1896, to be the date, and the office of the Waimate County Council, at Waimate, to be the place, for holding such first election; also to appoint Thursday, the 26th day of November, 1896, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, to be the time, and the office of the Waimate County Council, at Waimate, to be the place, at which the first meeting of Trustees shall be held.

Notice of the Laying-off of a Road over Native Land in the Rotorua Survey District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under the authority of "The Public Works Act, 1894," that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on 27th June, 1895, duly taken and laid off through the land specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said colony, by a warrant dated the 27th March, 1895.

Bonus for Destruction of Rabbits.—Notice No. 463.

THE various schemes for the destruction of rabbits received in response to Notice No. 436, appearing in the New Zealand Gazette of the 19th day of December, 1895, and subsequent issues, were submitted to the committee of investigation, who, after careful consideration, report as follows:
"Wellington, 16th October, 1896.
"The Hon. the Minister for Agriculture,
Wellington.
"Your committee have the honour to report as follows on the forty-six claims submitted to them:
"That, after having perused and carefully considered each of the several suggestions for the extermination of rabbits made by claimants for the reward offered by the Government, we are of opinion that no one of them satisfies the conditions prescribed, consequently we are unable to recommend that any award be made.

Appointing Sittings of Magistrate's Court.

  1. Sand Cay in Lengo Channel, Solomon Islands.
    THE position of a sand cay has been fixed by observations taken by H.M.S. "Pylades," and lies inside the portion marked on the chart "Sand-banks and reefs."
    It is about 6ft. high and 20ft. long, extending in an east-and-west direction, and forms a useful mark for fixing a ship's position when in this neighbourhood.
    From it the following bearings were taken: West extreme of Nugu Island, N. 14° W.; east extreme of Nugu Island, N. 3° W.; south extreme of Pari Pile, S. 86° W.
    Charts affected: 214 and 1469.

  2. Beacon on Tareti Island, Noumea.
    Information has been received that the beacon on Tareti Island no longer exists, and probably will not be replaced.
    Charts affected: 2069 and 2907.
    Sailing Directions: Pacific Islands, Vol. i., Part ii., page 38.
  3. Espiritu Santo Island, West Coast.
    Information has been received that the Mission Station shown on Chart 1380, two miles south of Pallier, is named Nogougou.
    A reef with 6 fathoms on it, and 10 and 11 fathoms close on both sides, extends in a south-easterly direction from the flagstaff for a distance of one mile. Less water may exist.
    Chart affected: 1380.

  4. Alite Harbour, Malaita Island, West Coast.
    Attention is drawn to the plan of this harbour which is given on Chart 1414, and not on chart 97.
    Charts affected: 97, 214, 1414, 1469.
    Sailing Directions: Pacific Islands, Vol. i., page 372.
  5. Aiyo Harbour, Malaita Island, East Coast.
    Attention is called to the fact that there is no plan of this harbour given on Chart 1349, as stated in Sailing Directions, Pacific Islands, Vol. i., page 376, note at the bottom of the page.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.
IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me under "The Public Works Act, 1894," and any amendment thereof, and also of "The Government Railways Act, 1894," I, Alfred Jerome Cadman, the Minister for Railways, do hereby make the following alterations in the scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alterations to come into force on and after the 1st day of November, 1896:
