INNER ROUTE TO TORRES STRAIT.
Positions of Tannadice Rock, West Extreme of Bih Reef and
North Extreme of Lansdown Reef.
Notice is hereby given that the correct positions of the
following dangers have been ascertained, and are supplied by
Captain Howard, R.N., H.M.S. "Dart":—
Tannadice Rock is situated at the N.W. extreme of a
shoal 6½ cables long in a N.W. and S.E. direction and 4
cables broad, the depths on which vary from 3 to 7 fathoms.
The depth on the rock is 5ft. at L.W.S., and it lies in the
following position, viz.:—

Restoration Rock bears N. 59° W., distant 4⅜ miles.
The western extreme of Bih (b) Reef lies in—

and has foul ground extending half a mile therefrom. The
reef is not safe to approach.
The north point of Lansdown Reef has a depth of
2 fathoms on it, with 9 to 10 fathoms close to the north-
ward, and is about a mile to the northward of its position on
the chart, viz.:—

From the north point—
Cape Direction Summit (500) bears S. 12½° W., distant
4 miles;
Wye Reef Beacon, S. 85° E., distant 3⅜ miles;
Chapman Island Summit, S. 37½° E., distant 6¼ miles.
From the north point the reef trends S. 42° E., 6 cables;
then S. 31° E., 1½ miles. Southward of this the reef is
correctly charted.
Bearings are magnetic. The latitudes and longitudes are
taken from the new chart, No. 2920, published in June,
1896.

Alterations to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and Charges in Force
upon the New Zealand Government Railways.
IN pursuance of all powers and authorities enabling me
under "The Public Works Act, 1894," and any amend-
ment thereof, and also of "The Government Railways Act,
1894," I, Alfred Jerome Cadman, the Minister for Rail-
ways, do hereby make the following alterations in the
scale of fares, rates, and charges in force on the New
Zealand Government railways open for traffic, such alter-
tions to come into force on and after the 26th day of October,
1896:—
PART I.—PASSENGERS.
LOCAL FARES AND REGULATIONS.
AUCKLAND SECTION.
Hot Lakes.
Return excursion tickets, available for three months from
date of issue, will be issued from Auckland, Newmarket, and
Onehunga to Rotorua.
Fares: 45s. first class, 30s. second class.
Te Aroha Hot Springs.
Return excursion tickets, available for two months from
date of issue, will be issued from Auckland, Newmarket, and
Onehunga to Te Aroha or Paeroa (and vice versa).
Fares: 30s. first class, 20s. second class.
Round-trip tickets, available for two months from date of
issue, will be issued from Auckland to Te Aroha or Paeroa
by rail, Te Aroha or Paeroa to Thames by coach, Thames
to Auckland by steamer (or vice versa).
Fares: 34s. first class, 28s. second class.
Okoroire Hot Springs.
Return excursion tickets, available for two months from
date of issue, will be issued from Auckland and Newmarket
to Okoroire.
Fares: 35s. first class, 22s. 6d. second class.
Holders of above excursion tickets to Rotorua, Te Aroha,
Paeroa, Okoroire, Auckland, Newmarket, and Onehunga
may break the journey at any station at which the train
is timed to stop after travelling ten miles from the original
starting-station, provided the specified time for which the
tickets are available is not exceeded.
HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTION.
Hanmer Plains Hot Springs.
Return excursion tickets for the through journey by rail
and coach to Hanmer Plains will be issued at Christchurch,
Papanui, and Kaiapoi, daily between November and April,
and on Wednesdays and Saturdays between May and October,
available for return for two months from date of issue.
Fare: First class, 30s.
The journey may be broken at any station at which the
train is timed to stop after travelling ten miles from the
original starting-station, provided the specified time for
which the tickets are available is not exceeded.
Bluff and Ocean Beach.
Return excursion tickets will be issued from Invercargill,
Clyde Street, Kew, Clifton, and Woodend, to Bluff and
Ocean Beach, by the 9.25 a.m., 11.25 a.m., and 1.45 p.m.
trains on Wednesdays, available for day of issue only.
Fares, 2s. 6d. first class; 1s. 6d. second class. The issue of
these tickets will cease after 21st April, 1897.
PART III.—GOODS: REGULATIONS.
(5.) Class F.—Hay, Turnips, Firewood, &c.
Tussock grass will be charged as Class Q, if cheaper than
Class F. The minimum quantity of such goods to be
charged as Class Q will be 4 tons; any less quantity will be
charged as such minimum or as Class E (actual weight),
single rate.
PART IV.—GOODS: LOCAL RATES.
AUCKLAND SECTION.
Timber from Mamaku to Paeroa, Te Aroha, and inter-
mediate stations will be charged 2s. 6d. per 100 superficial
feet.
NAPIER-TARANAKI SECTION.
New Plymouth Breakwater Line.
Goods of Classes A, B, C, D will be charged according to
ship's manifest, or by weight or measurement, at the option
of the Railway Department, at the following rates:—
Between New Plymouth Station and the Breakwater, 3s. 6d.
per ton. Quantities of less than 1 ton will be charged pro
rata at this rate, instead of at the rates specified under Regu-
lations 2 and 3 of Part III. Minimum charge, 1s.
Goods to be despatched inland by rail will be charged 1s.
per ton for resdespatching (minimum charge, 6d.), such charge
to be in addition to the classified rates from the Breakwater.
Goods for shipment requiring storage at the Goods Dépôt
will be charged 1s. 6d. per ton for the first week or fraction
of a week, and 2d. per ton per week for each additional
week.
Goods consigned to the Breakwater for shipment, and not
taken delivery of by the ship within six working-hours, will
be held thereafter at the risk of the consignor, and may be
returned, unloaded, and stored at the Goods Dépôt, at the
risk and expense of the consignor.
Cattle, sheep, horses, and pigs carried between the Moturoa
Cattle-yards and the Breakwater will be charged 7s. 6d. per
truck.
Goods of Classes A, B, C, D, conveyed between New
Plymouth Station and the Taranaki Freezing-works Com-
pany's siding at Moturoa, will be charged 2s. 6d. per ton.
HURUNUI-BLUFF SECTION.
Class Q, from Greenhills
The clause stating that road-metal, ships' ballast, and
gravel from Greenhills to Invercargill will be charged 1s. 6d.
per ton, is hereby cancelled.
PART V.—CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS, LIVE-
STOCK, PARCELS, AND LUGGAGE.
Class.
Patent fencing (wire and lathwood). Owners' risk .. D
Pelts, green or limed, in bags or casks .. .. D
PART VI.—WHARVES.
AUCKLAND SECTION.
Onehunga Wharf.—Rates.
Goods and live-stock shipped for places within the Provin-
cial District of Auckland will be free of charge.

Notice of the Laying-off of a Road, known as Mangamaire
Road, over Native Lands in the Wellington Land District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under
the authority of section 92 of "The Public Works Act, 1894,"
that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on the
1st day of September, 1896, duly taken and laid off through
the land specified in the said Schedule, under the authority
of the Governor of the said colony, by warrant dated the
10th June, 1896.
