Vesting Control of the Pareora Bridge in the County Council
of the Levels County.

A PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by section one hundred and fourteen of
“ The Public Works Act, 1894 ” (hereinafter termed
“ the said Act ”), it is, inter alia, enacted that the Governor
may, upon the terms and conditions in the said section
mentioned, by Proclamation publicly notified, direct that
any bridge already constructed, or which may hereafter be
constructed, over or across any river or arm of the sea
respectively, shall, from and after a date to be fixed in such
Proclamation, be under the exclusive care, control, and
management of such local authority as shall be mentioned
in that behalf in such Proclamation; and may fix and deter-
mine whether all or any, and, if so, what, part of the cost
of maintaining, repairing, improving, or reconstructing any
such bridge is to be paid by the local authority or local
authorities, and, if so, by what local authority or authorities;
and may, by any such Proclamation as aforesaid, direct how,
when, and to whom any such payment is to be made :

And whereas it is expedient that provision should be made
under the said Act for the purposes hereinafter mentioned :

Now, therefore, I, David, Earl of Glasgow, the Governor
of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance
of the powers and authorities in me vested by the said
Act, and of every other power and authority in anywise
enabling me in this behalf, do hereby direct that the bridge
described in the Schedule hereto, and known as the Pareora
Bridge, over the Pareora River, on the main road between
Timaru and Waimate, shall, from and after the date of this
Proclamation, be under the exclusive care, control, and
management of the County Council of the Levels County
(hereinafter referred to as “ the said county ”) ; and, in
further pursuance and exercise of the power aforesaid, I
do hereby fix and determine that the cost of maintaining,
repairing, improving, and, if need be, reconstructing the said
bridge shall, from and after the day aforesaid, be provided
and paid by the local authorities hereinafter mentioned in

the following proportions: namely, County Council of the
Levels County one-half, and County Council of Waimate
County one-half. And I do also hereby direct that the
contributions hereby required to be made as aforesaid by
the Waimate County Council towards the cost of maintain-
ing, repairing, improving, or reconstructing the said bridge
shall be paid from time to time, in the proportions herein-
before prescribed, by the Waimate County Council out of
the County Fund of the Waimate County, within a period
of thirty days after a demand in writing, made by or on
behalf of the said county, stating the amount so required to
be paid and the purpose for which it is so required, shall
have been left at the office of the local body liable hereunder
to make such payment; and the payment so to be made
shall be made from time to time to the Clerk of the said
county for and on behalf of the said county.

SCHEDULE.

That bridge over the Pareora River, known as the Pareora
Traffic Bridge, on the line of the Main South Road, partly in
Levels County and partly in Waimate County, Land Dis-
trict of Canterbury, the site of which is delineated on the
plan marked S.G. 26326, deposited in the Head Office of the
Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the
Wellington Land District, and thereon coloured red.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Right
Honourable David, Earl of Glasgow; Knight
Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of
Saint Michael and Saint George; Governor and
Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s
Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies;
and issued under the Seal of the said Colony,
at the Government House, at Wellington, this
twenty-fourth day of September, in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-
six.
