STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.

Result of poll taken on the 24th day of August, 1896, upon the proposal to borrow £1,900, under “The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886,” to construct a bridge, and make the necessary approaches thereto, over the Patea River, on the Mountain Road (Broadway), in the Town of Stratford:—

Number of ratepayers on special roll, 278; number of votes exercisable, 288: Number of ratepayers voting in favour of the proposal, 181; number of votes recorded in favour of the proposal, 188; number of ratepayers voting against the proposal, 3; number of votes recorded against the proposal, 4; number of informal votes recorded, 1.

I declare the above proposal to be carried.

Rules of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society.

It is hereby notified that a copy of the rules of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, duly signed, has been deposited in this office, and the said society is therefore deemed to be a duly-registered acclimatisation society under “The Animals Protection Act, 1880.”

Notice of the Laying-off of a Road, known as Puwehea Road, over Native Lands in the Wellington Land District.

NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under the authority of “The Native Land Court Act, 1894,” that the road described in the Schedule hereto was, on the 27th January, 1896, duly taken and laid off through the lands specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said colony, by warrant dated the 12th January, 1895.

Notice to Mariners, No. 22 of 1896.

POSITION OF WELLINGTON ROCK, WHANGAPAROA BAY, HAURAKI GULF.

Marine Department,

Wellington, N.Z., 21st August, 1896.

REFERRING to Notice to Mariners, No. 10 of 1896, issued by this department on the 21st April last, it is hereby notified that the position of Wellington Rock has been correctly ascertained by Captain Neale, of the Government steamer “Hinemoa.” This sunken rock lies in lat. 36° 35' S., and long. 174° 50' E.; it is 100ft. long running east and west, and 50ft. wide running north and south.

From Wellington Rock Wanga Point bears E.S.E., magnetic, one mile and a half.

The least water on this rock is 2 fathoms at low tide, with 6 fathoms close to on south side, and 10 fathoms close to in all other directions.

Masters of vessels are cautioned not to pass between the rock and the Whangaparoa Peninsula.

Notice to Mariners, No. 23 of 1896.

DREDGING OPERATIONS, WANGANUI RIVER.

Marine Department,

Wellington, N.Z., 26th August, 1896.

THE Wanganui Harbour Board have notified that dredging operations will be commenced about this date on the flats in the Wanganui River, about one mile on the Heads side of the Town Bridge. The work will be carried out by a Priestman’s grab-dredge, mounted on a barge, and the dredge-barge and spoil-punts will be anchored between the river training-walls. The following signals will be shown for the guidance of shipmasters using the port:—

When the barge and punts are anchored to the south of the river-channel: A red ball will be hoisted for use in the day-time, and a red light at night.

When the barge and punts are anchored to the north of the channel: A green ball will be hoisted for use in the day-time, and a green light at night.

All steamers must pass the dredge and punts at slow speed.

Bonus for the Production of Quicksilver.

Mines Office,

Wellington, 19th September, 1895.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of fourpence (4d.) per pound will be paid on the production of the first one hundred thousand pounds weight (100,000lb.) of good marketable retorted quicksilver, free from all impurities, from any mine in New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to say:—

  1. That at least one-third of the quantity is produced on or before the 31st March, 1897, and the remaining two-thirds on or before the 31st March, 1899.

  2. No bonus will be payable until the whole of the one hundred thousand pounds (100,000lb.) of quicksilver has been produced as stipulated to the satisfaction of an officer to be appointed by the Minister of Mines, and on whose certificate alone the bonus will be paid.

  3. In the event of more than one person producing the required quantities of quicksilver before the dates named, inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus, the amount will be divided in proportion to the quantities produced by each applicant, but in no case shall any bonus be paid until at least one hundred thousand pounds (100,000lb.) of quicksilver has been produced in the aggregate.

Bonus for Production of Mineral Manure.—Notice No. 445.

Department of Agriculture,

Wellington, 25th July, 1896.

A BONUS of £200 is hereby offered for the discovery and working within the colony of a deposit or deposits of marketable mineral manure.

The following are the conditions under which the bonus is offered and will be paid:—

  1. That the raw material be easily accessible, and within reasonable distance of a road or railway.
