REGISTRAR-GENERAL’S Report on the Vital Statistics of the Principal Towns of New Zealand during the Month of September, 1895:—

RETURN of the Number of Births, with the Actual Mortality of Males and Females, and the Proportion of Deaths to Population, in the under-mentioned Boroughs, during the Month of September, 1895.

*The remaining suburbs do not lie within borough boundaries, and particulars respecting them have not been obtained for the Vital Statistics.

Deaths occurring at hospitals have been omitted, except where deceased had resided before admission in one or other of the above boroughs, in which case the death is counted against the borough of residence.

The total births in the above boroughs amounted to 379, against 365 in August, an increase of 14. The deaths in September were 196, an increase of 4 on the number in August. Of the total deaths, males contributed 115, females 81. Fifty-four of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 27·55 per cent. of the whole number; 42 of these were under 1 year of age. There were 37 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: Five men of 68, 70 (two), 77, 80, and five women of 69, 75, 76, 85, 89, died at Auckland; three men of 73, 75, 88, and one woman of 66, at Wellington; five men of 65, 73, 74, 83, 88, and four women of 70, 73, 74, 78, at Christchurch; ten men of 66, 68 (two), 70, 71 (two), 72, 83, 84, 96, and four women of 75, 77, 78, 82, at Dunedin.

THE following Table shows the Causes of the Deaths of Persons of both Sexes under 5 Years of Age and 5 Years and upwards, and the Proportions per Cent. of Deaths from each Cause, in the Boroughs above given registered during the Month of September, 1895.
