Vesting Control of Opihi Bridge in Geraldine County Council.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by section one hundred and fourteen of
"The Public Works Act, 1894" (hereinafter termed
"the said Act"), it is, inter alia, enacted that the Governor
may, upon the terms and conditions in the said section men-
tioned, by Proclamation publicly notified, direct that any
bridge already constructed, or which may hereafter be con-
structed, over or across any river or arm of the sea respec-
tively, shall, from and after a date to be fixed in such
Proclamation, be under the exclusive care, control, and
management of such local authority as shall be mentioned
in that behalf in such Proclamation; and may, by any such
Proclamation as aforesaid, fix and determine whether all or
any, and, if so, what part, of the cost, whether theretofore
incurred or thereafter to be incurred, of maintaining, repair-
ing, improving, or reconstructing any such bridge is to be
provided and paid by the local authority or local authorities,
and, if so, by what local authority or authorities; and may,
by any such Proclamation as aforesaid, direct how, when,
and to whom any such payment is to be made:
And whereas it is expedient that provision should be made
under the hereinbefore in part recited Act for the purposes
hereinafter mentioned:
Now, therefore, I, David, Earl of Glasgow, the Governor
of the Colony of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of
the powers and authorities in me vested by the said Act, and
of every other power and authority in anywise enabling me
in this behalf, do hereby direct that the bridge known as the
Opihi Bridge, together with such approaches and protection
works as are mentioned and defined in the Schedule hereto,
shall, from and after the date of this Proclamation, be under
the exclusive care, control, and management of the Geraldine
County Council; and, in further pursuance and exercise of
the powers aforesaid, I do hereby fix and determine that the
cost of constructing certain protection works now or in pro-
gress on the 31st July, 1895, and also the cost of maintaining,
repairing, improving, or reconstructing the said bridge, with
the approaches and protection works as aforesaid, in the
future, is to be provided and paid by the Geraldine County
Council and the Levels County Council in equal proportions.
And I do hereby also further direct that any contribution
hereby required to be made as aforesaid by the Council of
the Levels County shall be paid from time to time in the
proportion hereinbefore prescribed out of the county funds
of the said county within a period of thirty days after de-
mand in writing made by or on behalf of the said Geraldine
County Council, and all such payments shall be made from
time to time to the Clerk of the said County Council for and
on account of such county.
SCHEDULE.
OPIHI BRIDGE.
The bridge known as the Opihi Bridge, on the Main North
Road between Timaru and Temuka, extending from the right
bank of the said river at the northern boundary of Section
No. 4226, Block VI., Arowhenua Survey District, to the left
bank of the said river at the southern boundary of Native
Reserve No. 881, a distance of 2,250ft., more or less; the ap-
proaches at the ends, being each 100ft. long, together with the
fences appertaining thereto; the old protective works, ex-
tending along the left bank of the said river in a westerly
direction from the northern end of the said Opihi Bridge for
a distance of 17 chains; the new protective works, extending
from a point on the western side of the said bridge 780ft.,
more or less, from its northern end, to a point on the left bank
of the said river for a distance of 30Β½ chains; and the pro-
tective works extending along the right bank of the Opihi
River at the southern end of the said bridge for a distance of
9 chains: be all the aforesaid distances more or less; as the
said bridge, approaches, fences, and protective works are
delineated on the plan marked S.G. 27065, deposited in the
Head Office of the Department of Lands and Survey, at
Wellington, in the Wellington Land District, and thereon
marked in red.

Honourable David, Earl of Glasgow; Knight
Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of
Saint Michael and Saint George; Governor and
Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty's
Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies;
and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at
the Government House, at Wellington, this third
day of October, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and ninety-five.
