Notice to Mariners, No. 40 of 1895.
MANUKAU HARBOUR ENTRANCE.—NORTH HEAD LEADING-BEACONS.
Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 1st October, 1895.
NOTICE is hereby given that, owing to the extension of the South Head Beach (abreast of main lighthouse) to the westward, the present upper beacon-site on the North Head has become useless in consequence of its close proximity to steep cliffs, rendering it necessary to dispense with the upper leading-beacon and light for the present. Masters of vessels are therefore warned that, on and after this date, there will be two leading-beacons and lights on the north side of the harbour to guide vessels in and out of the South Channel, instead of three as heretofore.
NOTE.—The north end of the Emma Spit touches the line of North Head beacons. Vessels in entering should keep the North Head beacons in line until Kaitaraki Point opens off the South Head, then open the beacons fully a breadth to the eastward. Vessels bound outward should keep the North Head beacons open to the eastward, rounding the South Head, until Kaitaraki Point is closed, then keep in line.
