(a.) Field Artillery—continued.

  1. Practice.

Officers prior to appointment as Major
The same as for Captain, with the addition of the drill and instruction of a brigade, mounted and dismounted; to criticize in writing practice reports.

(b.) Naval and Garrison Artillery.

Officers prior to appointment as Lieutenant

  1. Drill.
    Squad and Company, Carbine Sword Exercise, Manual and Firing Exercises, Drill with Guns in Use.

  2. Exercises.
    Examination in the latest Instructions for Practice.

  3. Instructions.
    Comments: To take to pieces and put together and explain the action of the following material: The lock and firing arrangement of any B.L. or Q.F. gun in charge; the obturator of any B.L. gun on charge, and the action of the breech-block and closing gear; the method of controlling recoil, the traversing and running up and back gear; the action of any H.P. cylinder on charge.

  4. (a.) Material Appliances.
    Elementary Instruction.

  5. (b.) Ammunition.
    To explain the action of any of the fuzes or tubes in use; to recognise at sight and to describe the various projectiles in use; to instruct in filling and emptying shell.

  6. (c.) Range-finding.

  7. (d.) Care and Preservation of Mountings.

Officers prior to appointment as Lieut.-Commander or Captain
The same as for Lieutenant, with the addition of—

  1. Exercises.
    Manning Batteries for Action and Fire Discipline: To tell off and post the necessary detail to fight one or more groups of guns; full instructions to be given to range-finders and transmitters, group officers, gun-captains, and layers for firing at a moving target (only gun-captain, layer, elevating and traversing numbers required actually for this).

  1. (a.) Practice.
    To criticize these reports of practice from a coast battery at a stationary target.

Officers prior to appointment as Commander of Naval Brigade, or as Major
The same as for Captain, with the addition—

To explain and put in practice the tactical system of commanding and fighting a subsection or section embracing two or more forts.

INFANTRY.

Officers prior to appointment as Lieutenant

  1. Drills.
    Recruit or Squad, Company.

  2. Exercises.
    Rifle Exercises, Manoeuvre of a Company, Advanced and Rear Guards and Outposts.

  3. Musketry Instruction.
    Instruction of Recruits, Preliminary Drill and Practice, Drill and Practice Returns.

  4. Miscellaneous.
    Guards, Shelter, Trench, and Pit Exercise.

Officers prior to appointment as Captain
The same as for Lieutenants, with the addition of—

  1. Drill.
    Command of a Company in a Battalion.

  2. Exercises.
    Infantry Drill: the whole book.

  3. Musketry Regulations.
    The whole book.

Officers prior to appointment as Major
The same as for Captains, with the addition of—

  1. Drill.
    Equitation, Practical, Battalion Drill.

ENGINEERS.

The same as for Infantry, with the addition of—
Signalling and Elementary Field Engineering.

Manual of Signalling, Elementary Field Engineering.

FORM V.-1.
Volunteer Corps.

Form of Enrolment of Volunteers.
