Footnotes
- No trace of the Hessian fly; no loss through floods or caterpillars.
† Comparison with results of 1893 shows an increase in number of holdings, but considerable shrinkage in crops (amounting to nearly 50 per cent. in grass-seed) by reason of wet weather during harvest. In many instances grass after being cut was entirely useless for hay. Some grass-sown lands have gone back into native grass.
‡ No Hessian fly or codlin-moth; some damage done by caterpillars, more by small birds.
§ Estimates of grain have been checked by results of threshing, and may be taken as accurate. 'No Hessian fly; falling-off in average yields per acre, due to caterpillars, rust, and hard weather. It is feared that much grain has been injured by the wet harvest.
|| Decrease in yield of cocksfoot in Akaroa County, caused by bad weather and prevalence of "Yorkshire fog." In some places the "fog" was so thick that the cocksfoot was not worth cutting.
