A PROCLAMATION.
IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority vested in the Governor by “The Marriage Act, 1880,” I, David, Earl of Glasgow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby abolish the existing marriage districts known as the Christchurch, Lyttelton, Akaroa, and Ellesmere Districts, and do proclaim and declare that the territory heretofore comprised within the said districts is hereby divided anew into five marriage districts, the names and boundaries whereof shall be as follow:—
LITTLE RIVER DISTRICT.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded towards the north-east by a right line drawn from the summit of the Port Hills through Trig. Station L1 to Mount Herbert; thence towards the north by a right line to Mount Herbert Peak, and by that line continued to the Mount Herbert Peak Road; thence again towards the north-east and north by the south sides of the said Mount Herbert Peak Road and the Purau and Akaroa Road to the junction of the latter road with the Port Levy and Little River Road; thence again towards the north-east and towards the east and south-east by the west side of the said Port Levy and Little River Road to its junction with the Terawera Valley Road; thence by the south side of the said Terawera Valley Road to the Little River Railway Reserve; thence to and by the south side of the Barry Pass Road to Barry Pass; thence by a line along the summit of the main range over the said Barry Pass, Wooded Peak, French Hill, Wainui Peak, Kitson’s Pole, Saddle Hill, and Carew’s Peak to Mount Bossu; thence by a line along the summit of the spur running down to the eastern head of Island Bay; thence towards the south-west and south by the ocean to Taumutu at the mouth of Lake Ellesmere; thence towards the north and west generally by a right line to the mouth of the River Halswell, by a line along the middle of that river, by Section No. 1069, by the northern side of the Ahuriri Bush Road South, by Sections Nos. 1901 and 1863 to the south-east corner of Section No. 1093, and thence by a line along the summit of the Port Hills.
CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded towards the north by the Waimakariri River; towards the east by the sea to Whitewash Head; towards the south-east generally by a leading spur, thence to the Borough of Lyttelton, thence by that borough to its north-western boundary and by a due north line to and by the summit of the Port Hills to the south-east corner of Section No. 1093, by Sections Nos. 3585 and 32581, the Ahuriri Bush Road South, and Section No. 1879, to the River Halswell, and by a line along the middle of that river to Lake Ellesmere; thence towards the south-west generally by Lake Ellesmere and the right bank of the Selwyn River to the Great South Road, and towards the north-west generally by that road, the Greendale and Station Road, and the Selwyn and Waimakariri Road produced to the Waimakariri River.
LYTTELTON DISTRICT.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded towards the north-west and north by the summit of the Port Hills to a point due north of the north-west corner of the Borough of Lyttelton, by a right line to that corner, by the northern boundaries of that borough and by a leading spur to Whitewash Head; towards the north-east by the sea to the highest ridge of hills separating Port Levy and Pigeon Bay; towards the south-east by a line along that ridge passing over Mount Sinclair to the south side of the Purau and Akaroa Road; and towards the south generally by the south side of the said road and of Mount Herbert Peak Road to a point in line with Herbert Peak and Mount Herbert, thence by a right line over Herbert Peak to Mount Herbert, and thence by a right line passing over Trig. Station L1 to the summit of the Port Hills.
AKAROA DISTRICT.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded towards the north-east, east, and south-east by the sea; and towards the west generally by a line along the summit of the eastern watershed of Island Bay and of the main ridge passing over Mount Bossu, Carew’s Peak, Saddle Hill, Kitson’s Pole, Wainui Peak, and French Hill to Barry’s Pass, by the south side of Barry’s Pass Road and of the Terawera Valley Road, by the western side of the Port Levy and Little River Road, and by a line along the summit of the highest ridge separating Port Levy and Pigeon Bay to the sea.
ELLESMERE DISTRICT.
All that area in the Canterbury Land District bounded towards the north-east by the Selwyn River to its mouth, and by the northern shore of Lake Ellesmere to the mouth of the Halswell River; towards the south-east by a right line thence to Taumutu, and thence by the sea; towards the south-west generally by the Rakaia River; and towards the north-west generally by the Great South Road.
And I hereby declare that this Proclamation shall come into operation on the twenty-first day of February, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-four.
