was beating through High Channel, near Auckland. The
position he gives is the S.E. end of the south-eastern of
the David Rocks bearing N.E. by E., and the north-eastern
end of the most northerly of those rocks bore N. by E.,
magnetic. Captain Burgess, Harbourmaster at Auckland,
who has since examined the locality, gives the position about
two and a half cables N.E. by E. ½ E. from that given by the
master of the "Zeno," and reports that the least water he
found was about 19ft. at low water springs. A further survey
of the rock will be made.

Notice to Mariners, No. 44 of 1893.

ROCK IN RANGAOUNOU BAY, NORTH-EAST COAST, NORTH
ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 21st October, 1893.

WITH reference to Notice to Mariners No. 4, issued by
this department on the 15th February last, it is
hereby notified that the sunken rock discovered in Rangaounou Bay by Captain Johnson, of the steamer "Staffa," has
been recently examined by Captain Fairchild, of the Government steamer "Hinemoa," who reports that the rock has on
it 13ft. of water at low water springs, with 14 fathoms all
round, and that it seldom breaks. It lies on the following
magnetic bearings: N.W. end of Moturoa N.N.E., distant
one mile and three-quarters; Puheki Hills S.S.E., and
Blackney Point S. by W., distant four miles and a half.

IN pursuance of the powers vested in him by section 152
of "The Mining Act, 1891," His Excellency the Governor directs it to be notified that application has been made
to him to proclaim the watercourses known as the Waipori
River and its tributaries, in the Provincial District of Otago,
to be watercourses into which tailings, mining débris, and
waste water of every kind used in, upon, or discharged from
any claim or licensed holding adjacent to such watercourses
shall be suffered to flow or be discharged.

Creek and its tributaries, in the Provincial District of Westland, to be watercourses into which tailings, mining débris,

from any claim or licensed holding adjacent to such watercourses shall be suffered to flow or be discharged.

Bonus on Starch manufactured in New Zealand.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, 10th October, 1893.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of two pounds
(£2) a ton will be paid on 100 tons of starch manufactured in the Colony of New Zealand in each of the years
1894 and 1895.

CONDITIONS.

  1. Notice of intention to claim the bonus for 100 tons in
    1894 must be given in writing to the Colonial Secretary not
    later than the 30th June, 1894. Notice of intention to claim
    the bonus for 100 tons in 1895 must be given in the same
    manner not later than the 30th June, 1895.

  2. The claims must be made respectively before the 31st
    December, 1894 and 1895.

  3. The first claimant who proves to the satisfaction of the
    Government that he has fulfilled all the conditions is to be
    the recipient of the bonus.

  4. Evidence to be produced of such a nature as will enable
    an officer appointed by the Government to certify that the
    above-stated quantity in each year has been actually made,
    sold, and delivered.

  5. The bonus to be paid only on the certificate of such
    officer.

Prizes for Collections of Noxious Weeds and Insects.—
Notice No. 365.

Department of Agriculture,
Wellington, 7th April, 1893.

PRIZES offered for collections of noxious weeds and
insects, &c.:-

Collection of noxious weeds: First prize, £10; second, £5.
All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.
Each specimen must be mounted on paper 18in. by 11in.,
and bear, if possible, the popular and scientific name, also
the locality where gathered.

Collection of insects injurious to New Zealand vegetation,
and their natural enemies and parasites: First prize, £10;
second, £5.

All insects must be properly set and named, also have
locality tickets attached.

The collections winning the prizes to become the property
of the department, where they will remain on exhibition
with the name of the collector affixed.

All collections for competition must be delivered at the
office of the Secretary for Agriculture, at the Government
Buildings, at Wellington, not later than the 31st December,
1893.
