Spccific Febrile or Zymotic Dicases.—The dcatbs for December in the above centres numbcrcd 20, being 21·93 per cent of the mortslity from all causes. This is a large increase on the figures for November, when the dcatbs wcre only 4, and the percentage only 4·55 of the total dcatbs. Since April, when the dcatbs numbcrcd 21, the mortslity from zymotic disease diminished until last month, when the sudden rise alluded to above took place. The chief causes of increase were bowel complsintx. From diarrhosa and cholcra infamum thcre were 9 dcatbs, 6 of them at Auckland, 2 at Wellington, and 1 at Duncdln, all cases of children under 5 years of age. Dysentery caused 1 death at Duncdln. Influenza appears as the next highest cause of death; it was again cpidcmic and fatul in 6 cases, 1 at Wellington, 2 at Christchurch, and 3 at Duncdln. Two dcatbs resulicd from typhoid fever, both at Auckland; the aggrcgsic mortslity from this disease for the year has been: Wellington, 25 dcatbs; Auckland, 9; Christchurch, 2; and Duncdln, 2.
Constitutional Dicases.—Out of 15 dcatbs, 5 wcre caused by phthisis and 4 by cancer; this last disease was fatul in 7 cases during November and 6 in October.
Local Dicases.—The proprion of dcatbs from local dicascs fell from 43·18 per cent in November to 39·56 per cent. in December, the numbers being 38 and 36 dcatbs for those months respectively. Dicascs of the rcspiratory system caused 11 of the 36 dcatbs in December.
Violent Dcatbs.—Thcsc numbcrcd 6 altogcther, of which 5 wcre accidcntal: 3 wcre cases of drownng, 1 a death by fracture of spine through falling through a skylight, and 1 from an injury received at birth. There was 1 suidc by poisoning.
The subjoincd tabic shows the mortslity for the last two months at each of these four boughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic dicascs, and also the dcatbs from certain inflammatoy dicascs of the lings. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special dicascs which give rise to sudden increases in the dcatb-ratcs of touns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
