Notice of the Laying-off of Roads over Lands in the Otago Land District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under the authority of “The Land Act, 1885,” and “The Land Act, 1892,” that the roads described in the Schedule hereto were, in March, 1893, duly taken and laid off through the lands specified in the said Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said colony, by a warrant of the date mentioned therein.
SCHEDULE.
ALL those parcels of land in the Otago Land District, situated in the Town of Hyde, containing by admeasurement 2 acres and 30 perches, more or less, and defined as follows:—
That area, containing by admeasurement 1 rood 8 perches, more or less, being a road of irregular width intersecting Section No. 1 of Block VI., Town of Hyde, and bounded towards the south-east by Section No. 2 of said Block VI., 218 links; towards the west by the western boundary-line of the said Section No. 1, 347·6 links; and towards the north-east by a right line, 276·3 links.
That area, containing by admeasurement 1 acre 1 rood 5 perches, more or less, being a road 100 links wide intersecting Section No. 2 of Block VI., Town of Hyde, the eastern side of which commences at a point on the south-eastern boundary-line of Section No. 1 of the said Block VI. distant 218 links from the southern corner of the said Section No. 1, and proceeds in a generally southerly direction on bearings and distances as follow: 141° 14′, 323·3 links; 158° 17′, 463·8 links; 186° 19′, 484·6 links, to the Otago Central Railway Reserve.
That area, containing by admeasurement 2 roods 17 perches, more or less, being a road 100 links wide intersecting Section No. 3 of Block VI., Town of Hyde, the north-eastern side of which commences at a point on the south-eastern boundary-line of the Otago Central Railway Reserve distant 663·3 links from the western boundary-line of said Section No. 3 (measuring along the south-eastern boundary-line of the Otago Central Railway Reserve), and proceeds in a south-easterly direction on bearings and distances as follow: 140° 8′, 91·7 links; 132° 25′, 183·4 links; 140° 15′, 115 links; 113° 47′, 229·8 links, to a road intersecting the said Section No. 3.
As the above-described parcels of land are shown upon the plan marked S.G. 18271, deposited in the Head Office of the Lands and Survey Department at Wellington, in the Land District of Wellington, and thereon coloured brown.

Prescribing the Places at which Record-books containing Particulars as to Inspection of Boilers shall be open for Inspection.
IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by “The Inspection of Machinery Act, 1882,” I, Joseph George Ward, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do hereby direct and appoint that the Record-book required to be kept by each Inspector under the provisions of the said Act shall be open to public inspection at the office of the Inspector of Machinery in each district, instead of at the Resident Magistrate’s Court as heretofore; and it is hereby declared that this direction shall come into force on and after the first day of June next.
As witness my hand, at Wellington, this thirtieth day of May, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-three.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, is published for general information.

INNER ROUTE TO TORRES STRAIT.—REPORTED DANGER OFF NO. 2 CLAREMONT ISLAND.
MR. DANIEL SULLIVAN, engaged in pearl-shelling, reports that he obtained a depth of 4½ fathoms at high water, on a rocky bottom, with the north-west end of No. 2 Claremont Island bearing E. by S. ½ S. about two miles distant, and thinks that there is not more than three fathoms at low water thereon.
As this danger is in the vicinity of Helms Shoal, reported to lie with No. 2 Claremont Island bearing S. 88° E., distant 1¼ miles, masters of vessels are hereby cautioned.

THE Town Clerk at Invercargill has notified that the following alterations have been effected in marking the channel of the New River:—
A red buoy has been placed on the reef inside the Heads, near the Pilot Station.
A black buoy has been substituted for the red buoy on the Guiding Star Rock, and the depth of water is 9ft. at low-water spring-tides.

WANGANUI HARBOUR SIGNALS.

THE Wanganui Harbour Board has given notice that the following signals will be used on and after the 21st June. These signals are in addition to the General Harbour Signals:—
FOR VESSELS IN THE ROADSTEAD, BOUND INWARDS.
Stand on and take the Bar.
Steamers, by day: Four balls, two on each yard-arm.
Sailing-vessels, by day: Four balls, two on each yard-arm, with a red pennant below south yard-arm.
Steamers, by night: Two red lights, one on each bar beacon.
Sailing-vessels, by night: Two red lights on front beacon, and one red light on back beacon.
FOR VESSELS IN RIVER, BOUND OUTWARDS.
Stand on and take the Bar.
Steamers, by day: One blue pennant at masthead.
Sailing-vessels, by day: One white pennant at masthead.
Steamers, by night: One red light showing up river, and, when steamer abreast of pilot-station, three red lights, one on front beacon and two on back beacon.
Sailing-vessels, by night: One red light and one white light.
Bar dangerous.
Steamers and sailing-vessels, by day: Two balls on one yard-arm and one on the other yard-arm.
Steamers and sailing-vessels, by night: One green light showing up river, and no lights shown on beacon seaward.

Licensing of Vehicles.—By-law made by Grey County Council.

IT is hereby notified, in accordance with section 311 of “The Counties Act, 1886,” that so much of the by-law No. 7, made by the Grey County Council, and sealed with the seal of the Council on the 7th May, 1893, as appoints the several sums to be paid to the county funds for the licensing of vehicles, has this day been approved by His Excellency the Governor.

PRIZES offered for collections of noxious weeds and insects, &c.:—
Collection of noxious weeds: First prize, £10; second, £5. All specimens must have been gathered in the colony.
Each specimen must be mounted on paper 18in. by 11in., and bear, if possible, the popular and scientific name, also the locality where gathered.
Collection of insects injurious to New Zealand vegetation, and their natural enemies and parasites: First prize, £10; second, £5.
All insects must be properly set and named, also have locality tickets attached.
