THE following notice, received from the Chairman of the
Te Aroha Town District, is published in accordance
with the provisions of "The Local Bodies' Loans Act, 1886."

Proposal to raise a loan of £1,500 under "The Local Bodies'
Loans Act, 1886," and "The Government Loans to Local
Bodies Act, 1886," and the several amendments of the said
Acts, or under either or any of the said Acts.
I hereby give notice that at the poll on Thursday, the 4th
day of May, 1893, the votes recorded in respect of the above
proposal were as follows: For the proposal, 79 votes; against
the proposal, 10 votes; informal votes, nil.
As a majority in number of the ratepayers have voted in
favour of the proposal, and the number so voting are entitled
to more than one-half in number of the votes which can be
exercised by the whole number of ratepayers, I declare the
above proposal to be carried.

following Notice to Mariners, respecting a defect in the red
sector of the Hope Island light, received from the Presidency
Port Officer, Madras, is published for general information.

INDIA—EAST COAST.—HOPE ISLAND LIGHT.
As the red sector showing in the direction of the Sacramento
Shoal has been found to throw beams of white light over the
portion marked by the sector, caution should be exercised
when navigating in the vicinity. A further notice will issue
when the defect is remedied or the abolition of the sector
decided upon.

of March, 1893, and published in the New Zealand
Gazette of the 6th day of April, 1893, I, Richard John
Seddon, the Minister having charge of the Marine Depart-
ment, do hereby designate
WILLIAM MEFFAN MOWATT,
of Wellington, Engineer-Surveyor under "The Shipping and
Seamen's Act, 1877," as the Engineer-Surveyor who shall
exercise the discretionary power of relieving steam-launches,
steamers plying in narrow waters, and ferry-boats from the
operation of the whole or part of Rule (a) in Division D,
Class 3, of the Schedule to an Order in Council dated the
16th day of September, 1890, and published in the New
Zealand Gazette of the 18th day of September, 1890, pre-
scribing the rules for providing life-saving appliances on
vessels.

Notice of the Laying-off of a Road over Land in the
Nelson Land District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under
the authority of "The Nelson Waste Lands Act, 1863," that
the road described in the Schedule hereto has been duly
taken and laid off through the land specified in the said
Schedule, under the authority of the Governor of the said
colony, by a warrant dated the 12th October, 1880.
SCHEDULE.
ALL that area in the Nelson Land District, situated in Sec-
tions Nos. 104, 106, and 165, Square 2, Block VII., Wai-ti
Survey District, containing by admeasurement 5 acres 1 rood
11 perches, more or less, being a road the eastern side of
which commences at a point on the southern side of the road
which passes through Sections Nos. 103, 104, and 106 of the
said Square 2, distant from the south-eastern boundary-line
of the said Section No. 104, 1448 links, more or less; and pro-
ceeds in a south-easterly direction, intersecting the said Sec-
tion No. 104 and Sections Nos. 106 and 165, to the south-east
corner of the said Section No. 165, being a distance of 7580
links, more or less, the width of the said road being 100 links
intersecting Sections Nos. 104 and 106 aforesaid, and 50 links
intersecting Section No. 165.
Also all that area containing by admeasurement 3 roods
37 perches, more or less, being a road, 50 links wide, the
western side of which commences at a point on the southern
boundary-line of Section No. 165, Square 2, Block VII.,
Wai-ti Survey District, distant from the south-western
corner of that section 467 links, more or less; and proceeds
in a north-easterly direction for a distance of 2002 links to a
point on the western side of the road hereinbefore described,
542 links north of road-peg xiv.
As the same are delineated on the plan marked S.G. 16062,
deposited in the District Land and Survey Office, Nelson.
