II.—Lord Howe Island.
Mr. Nicolls, a resident, and formerly master of a whaler, reports, viz.: Very foul ground between Mutton Bird Island and Wolfe Rock. Has seen many isolated breaks in heavy weather for at least five miles south of Ball’s Pyramid. Vessels should not pass nearer than seven miles. Abundance of fish can be caught on the banks to the north (Middleton, Kelso, &c.), but the red-mouthed snapper caught there is extremely poisonous.

BRISBANE RIVER.—RESTORATION OF BUOYS AND BEACONS, ETC.
NOTICE is hereby given that all the aids to navigation in the Brisbane River which were removed or destroyed by the recent floods have now been restored, with the following modifications:—
The leading beacons for the Hamilton Reach Channel now lead close to the northern edge of the dredged channel marking the deepest water.
The Eagle Farm Flats leading beacons will be shifted to-day 150ft. east of their former position.
The magnetic bearings of the beacons in the above cuttings are unaltered.
The old iron West Beacon marking the turn between the Inner and Outer Bar leads will be replaced by a red triangular beacon on or about the 8th instant.
Mariners are advised that the deepest water in the Outer Bar is on the eastern side of the cutting.

LARK PASSAGE, BARRIER REEF.—OUTER AND INNER BEACONS.
CAPTAIN INMAN, of the schooner “Myrtle,” reports that the outer and inner beacons in the Lark Passage have been washed away by the recent bad weather. They will be restored as soon as practicable.

BURNETT RIVER.—RESTORATION OF BUOYS AND BEACONS.
NOTICE is hereby given that the channel from the bar to Bundaberg has been buoyed and marked in accordance with the alterations caused by the recent floods.
The beacons leading across the bar bear S.W. by W. ½ W. (magnetic), and the least depth on that line is 4ft. 6in. at low-water springs.
An alteration has been made in the lead up stream from Fairymead Wharf; the triangular beacons there (lighted at night) now lead over to a square white beacon near Rubyana Wharf.
The minimum depth in No. 1 Cutting is 3ft. 8in. at low-water springs, and a gauge showing the depth in this channel has been erected at Rubyana Wharf.

It is hereby notified that the green-light pile beacon and red beacon off the North Breakwater are down, also the black beacon off Stony Point, having been swept away by the flood-waters.

NEWCASTLE, NEW SOUTH WALES.
NOTICE is hereby given that, as a result of the late disastrous flood, an accumulation of sand has formed, extending from the North Breakwater in a line 180ft. to the eastward of the “Cawarra” Wreck Buoy, where the depth of water has decreased to 14ft. low-water springs, and varying inwards to 10ft. No reliance can be placed on the soundings given on the chart at this place.
Masters of vessels of heavy draught are hereby cautioned that the Fairway Leading Light Towers must not be opened to the northward.

VICTORIA.—PORT PHILLIP BAY.—MENTONE JETTY.
NOTICE is hereby given that, on and after Wednesday, the 1st March, 1893, a green light, visible in clear weather about three miles distant, will be exhibited from a lamp-post, about 28ft. above high-water, erected on the end of the Mentone Jetty.

PORT OF GEELONG, VICTORIA.
MARINERS and others are hereby notified that dredging operations have been commenced at the Dry Bank in the South Channel, Geelong, the dredge heading east, and from which will be exhibited from the port side a basket-ball by day and two white lights by night.
Caution: Mariners and others navigating this channel must pass on the port or north side of the bridge, proceeding at the slowest possible rate of speed, and stopping engines while passing over the dredge’s mooring-chains.

Bonus for Eradicating the Californian Thistle.

CONDITIONS on which a bonus of £250 is offered for a means of eradicating the Californian thistle (Cnicus lanceolatus):—

All applications for the bonus must be sent addressed to the Hon. the Minister of Agriculture, Wellington, and must be in his hands not later than the 1st June, 1893.

The applicants must be prepared to submit their proposed means of eradication in such manner and at such time and place as the Minister shall direct.
-
The Government shall appoint a committee of three or more persons, under whose instructions and before whom all tests shall be carried through.
-
The proposed bonus, or any part thereof, will not be paid until the proposed remedy has been proved effectual.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares and Charges in Force upon the New Zealand Government Railways.
THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise and pursuance of the powers conferred by “The Government Railways Act, 1887,” do hereby make the following alterations in and additions to the scale of fares, rates, and charges on the New Zealand Government railways, to come into force on and after the 10th day of April, 1893:—

NELSON SECTION.
Bark, native, rough, Wai-iti to Nelson, will be charged as Class P. Minimum quantity, 6 tons per truck.
SHIPS’ GOODS ON PORT LINES.
Flock, in bales, will be carried by measurement at half-rates on the lines stated below, viz.:—

Onehunga–Auckland. | Lyttelton–Christchurch.
Picton–Blenheim. | Port Chalmers–Dunedin.
