For the Minister having charge of the Marine Department.

MALLICOLO AND SANTO ISLANDS, NEW HEBRIDES.-LORD HOWE ISLAND.

"Orlando," at Hobart, 28th February, 1893.

(Hydrographic Notice, No. 1.)

THE following information, received from H.M.S. "Dart," is hereby promulgated:-

HYDROGRAPHIC REMARKS.

I.-Mallicolo and Santo Islands, New Hebrides.

No shoal exists in the position reported by Mr. Munroe, of the s.s. "Croydon;" there is little doubt, however, that the "Croydon" touched on the coral patch lying about 8 cables north by east of Hetchin Island, shown on Chart No. 1570.

This cancels Notice to Mariners, No. 424-1891.

Anchorage on Coast of Mallicolo:-

West of Norsup Island: Very fair anchorage can be obtained in the head of the bay west of Norsup Island, in about 10 fathoms, sheltered from all but north-east winds. The entrance to the bay is clear of all dangers, passing on the north side of Norsup Island.

Rano Island: There is no anchorage on the west side of Rano Island. The channel inside of Rano and Wala Islands is perfectly clear.

Wala Island: Good anchorage inside of Wala Island in 17 fathoms, with right extreme of Wala Island in transit with left extreme of Rano Island, and left extreme of Pinalum Point in transit with right extreme of Sandy Spit on west side of Rano Island.

Hetchin Island: Good anchorage west of Hetchin Island in 16 fathoms.

Vao Island: Excellent anchorage in about 8 fathoms, with left extreme of Mallicolo just open of the Sandy Spit on south end of Vao Island, bearing S. 72° E. The spit can be safely rounded in 6 fathoms, at a distance of 1 cable.

Wowo: Temporary anchorage can be obtained in the little bay just west of North Cape, in 12 fathoms, with right extreme of Mallicolo S. 37° W. River-mouth S. 9° E., and left extreme of Mallicolo N. 50° E.

Malo Island: The west side of Malo Island is steep-to, and clear of all off-lying dangers, except a small isolated patch, 4 cables from the shore, about one mile south of the Mission (Abnetare); breaks in heavy weather; from it left extreme of Malo bears N. 28° E., right extreme of Malo S. 19° E.

Good anchorage off the Mission in 10 fathoms.

Malo Tine: Very good anchorage on the west side of Malo Tine Island (east side of Malo Island). Enter with right extreme of Malo Tavara in transit with left extreme of small islet off it bearing S. 19° E., and anchor just before the islet off the north end of Malo Tine is abeam, in 7 to 8 fathoms.

Setovi Island: Temporary anchorage may be obtained off the sandspit on the south-west corner of Setovi Island, in 17 fathoms; but there is barely swinging-room if the wind shifts to the westward.

Aore Island: There is no anchorage on the east side of Aore Island.

Malo Pass, or Bruet Channel: An excellent leading-mark for vessels proceeding through the Malo Pass, from the eastward, is right extreme of Malo Island in transit with left extreme of the lowest cliff of Hat Island, bearing S. 77° W.; this leads through the centre of the narrow channel between Malo Island and the reef south of the west point of Burwan Island, after which the channel is quite clear. Tides run through the narrow part from 5 to 6 knots, at springs with heavy rips. Rise and fall about 4ft.

Segond Channel: The northern entrance is perfectly clear. Entering by the south entrance the two left extremes of Aore Island are in transit with each other, bearing N. 31° E.; clear the foul ground off the south-east point of Santo. When right extreme of Aore is abeam, alter course up channel, keeping on the Aore side, which is quite steep-to.

Excellent anchorage south of the entrance of the Renée River in 10 fathoms, with the point on the north side of the river bearing N. 60° W. 3½ cables; also in the bay south-west of the spit off the entrance to the Bernier River, in 9 to 10 fathoms.

Charts affected: Nos. 1380 and 1570.

Sailing Directions: Pacific Islands, Vol. i. (Western Groups), pages 318 to 325.
