Christchurch the death-rate was 1.17 per 1,000 persons, and the increase of deaths from 11 in December to 19 in January. The death-rate of Wellington for last month was 1.10 per 1,000, being the lowest for the four chief towns. The number of deaths was 34, against 27 in December.

Specific Febrile or Zymotic Diseases.—The proportion of deaths from these complaints to the total deaths from all causes fell from 21.98 per cent. in December to 14.06 per cent. in January, but the actual number of deaths for the two months was not widely different, being 20 in December, against 18 last month. The deaths from diarrhoea and cholera infantum numbered 11: 3 at Auckland, 6 at Wellington, 1 at Christchurch, and 1 at Dunedin. Influenza, from which there were 6 deaths in December, was fatal in one case at Wellington and two at Dunedin during January. There was one death from whooping-cough at Christchurch, and one from diphtheria at Auckland. No deaths occurred from typhoid fever at Wellington, Auckland, and Dunedin, and only one at Christchurch.

Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths increased from 15 in December to 25 in January. Cancer caused 10 out of the 25, phthisis 9, tabes mesenterica 5, and diabetes 1.

Local Diseases.—Here again a large increase is observed, the number of deaths having been, December 36, January 58. Of these last, diseases of the nervous system caused the exceptionally large number of 19 deaths, 7 of which were from apoplexy. Diseases of the circulatory system contributed 7, and diseases of the respiratory organs 8, deaths. Diseases of the digestive system show an increase from 7 in the previous month to 16 in January. Under diseases of the urinary organs, the deaths were 7 from Bright's disease, nephritis, and kidney disease (not more specifically defined).

Violent Deaths.—Of 7 accidental deaths, one was caused by a kick from a horse, one was a case of “run over by tram,” one an accidental poisoning, and one a death of a child from scalding. There was one suicide by hanging.

The subjoined table shows the mortality for the last two months at each of these four boroughs from six principal specific febrile or zymotic diseases, and also the deaths from certain inflammatory diseases of the lungs. These causes of death have been distinguished from the others of the classes to which they belong as being the most important special diseases which give rise to sudden increases in the death-rates of towns, and the prevalence of which is closely connected with sanitary condition and climatic influence of the season on health.
