The following remarks apply to the four principal boroughs only: The births in January were 237, against 182 in December, an increase of 55. The deaths amounted to 128, against 91 in December, an increase of 37. There were 18 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards: 2 males of 74 and 65, and 2 females of 88 and 74, died at Auckland; 2 males of 73 and 72, and 2 females of 74 and 68, at Wellington; 1 male of 88, and 2 females of 79 and 73, at Christchurch; 4 males of 89, 87, 77, and 76, and 3 females of 82, 74, and 73, at Dunedin.

Comparison of Death-rates.-The highest death-rate for January was at Dunedin, 1.70 per 1,000 of population. The total deaths at this city increased from 23 in December to 38 last month. The next highest death-rate was at Auckland, 1.29 per 1,000 persons. Here the number of deaths showed an increase from 30 in December to 37 in January. At
