distinguished at more than 700 yards, and then only showed
as a dull-green streak. H.M.S. “Curacoa” grounded on
this patch at 10.45 a.m. on the 13th October, 1892, the leads
giving no warning, and, though the ship’s course was being
carefully watched from aloft in a favourable light, the shoal
was not seen till the vessel took the ground. The patch
and its surrounding area within a radius of one mile was
subsequently sounded over, and the position of the danger
fixed.
Curacoa Patch: Lat. 17° 46′ 15″ S., long. 177° 18′ 15″ E.
Double Hill (North Peak), S. 5° E., 6¼ miles; Iakuilau
Island (centre), N. 71° E., 3⅝ miles; Sand Cay, south of
Malamala Island (north-east extremity), N. 54° W., 1⅛ miles.

Kandavu Passage to Kawata Island (i., 91).

- Ovalau Island: East Danger is a small coral patch
having only 1½ fathoms over it. This shoal-head was plainly
seen. This patch is marked by a small black buoy immediately to the south of it.
West Danger is a small coral patch having not more than
15ft. on it, and showed plainly.
East Danger, from south reef of Namgani Island: Lat.
17° 36′ 10″ S., long. 178° 44′ 20″ E. South extreme point of
Namgani Island, N. 81° W., 3 miles.
West Danger: Lat. 17° 34′ 45″ S., long. 178° 38′ E. South
extreme point of Namgani Island, E., 3⅜ miles.
These dangers are reported by Mr. Smith, master of the
s.s. “Ovalau,” proceeding from Levuka to the north and
west. The “Ovalau” passed immediately south of both
dangers.

AUSTRALIA.—NORTH COAST.—APPROACHES TO PORT DARWIN, NORTHERN TERRITORY.
MASTERS of ships and others are hereby informed that on
and after the 1st February, 1893, a light of the following
description will be exhibited from Charles Point: Position
(approximately), lat. 12° 23′ 20″ S., long. 130° 37′ E. The
tower is built of iron and painted red and white in horizontal
bands. The focal plane of the light is 121ft. above high
water, and the light will be visible from a vessel’s deck, in
ordinary weather, eighteen miles. The light will be of the
first order, revolving every thirty seconds, and will show over
an arc of 257°, viz.: A green sector of 60°, over the Great
Fish Reef and adjacent dangers, from N. 22° E. to N. 82° E.;
bright 155° from N. 82° E. to S. 57° W.; and a red sector of
42°, showing over the shoals to the west of Port Darwin
entrance, from S. 57° W. to N. 81° W.; the remaining arc of
103° to be obscured.
Referring to Notice to Mariners, No. 5 of 1891, mariners
are hereby informed that the erection of the lighthouse on
Point Emery is postponed for the present.

Approving and appointing a Bonding Warehouse.
CUSTOMS.—In exercise of the powers in me for this
purpose vested by “The Customs Laws Consolidation
Act, 1882,” I, the Commissioner of Trade and Customs, do
hereby approve and appoint the under-mentioned warehouse
to be a warehouse for the reception of goods under bond,
namely:—
PORT OF WANGANUI.
A one-storied concrete building, with iron roof, situate on
Section 186, in and facing St. Hill Street, Wanganui, to be
known as
HATRICK’S BOND.
Given under my hand, at Wellington, this twelfth
day of December, one thousand eight hundred

Notice of the Laying-off of a Road over Land in the
Auckland Land District.
NOTICE is hereby given, by direction of His Excellency
the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, under
the authority of “The Native Land Court Act, 1886,” and
its amendments, that the road described in the Schedule
hereto was, on the 31st December, 1891, duly taken and laid
off through the land specified in the said Schedule, under the
authority of the Governor of the said colony, by a warrant of
the date mentioned therein.
SCHEDULE.
ALL that parcel of land in the Auckland Land District, containing by admeasurement 1 acre 3 roods 4 perches, more or
less, situate in the Omapere Survey District, and being a
road-line, 100 links wide, traversing the Whataipu Block (No.
5082); the middle line of which commences at a point on
the north-western boundary of Section No. 13 of Block IX.,
and proceeds north-westerly generally for a distance of 1777
links or thereabouts to the Matakai River: as the same is
delineated on Map No. 6430, deposited in the Survey Office,
Auckland.
Date of Governor’s warrant, 31st August, 1891.
All that parcel of land in the Auckland Land District,
containing by admeasurement 2 acres and 17 perches, more or
less, situate in the Omapere Survey District, and being a
road-line, 100 links wide, traversing a piece of Native land
unadjudicated upon and lying between the Horeke–Okaihau
Road and the Matakai River; the southern side of which
commences at an angle on the southern side of the Horeke–
Okaihau Road at a distance of 330 links or thereabouts
from the Utakura River, and proceeds south-easterly generally for a distance of 2127·4 links or thereabouts to the
Utakura Stream, at a point opposite to the southern side of
the road which traverses the Whataipu Block (No. 5082): as the same is delineated on Map No. 6430, deposited in the
Survey Office, Auckland.
Date of Surveyor-General’s warrant, 31st August 1891.

ALL that parcel of land in the Auckland Land District, containing by admeasurement 18 acres 3 roods 22 perches,
more or less, situate in the Kumeu and Waitakerei Survey
Districts, being a road, 100 links wide, traversing the Waitakerei Blocks Nos. 1A and 1B (No. 1902), the eastern side of
which commences at a point on the north-eastern boundary
of Block No. 1B aforesaid at a distance of 3043 links, more or
less, south-easterly from the Waitakerei River; and proceeds
south-westerly generally for a distance of 18870 links, more
or less, to a point on the West Coast 5 chains more or less, to
the southward of the mouth of the Waitakerei River aforesaid.
Also all that parcel of land in the Auckland Land District,
containing by admeasurement 1 acre and 1 perch, more or
less, situate in the Waitakerei Survey District, being a road,
100 links wide, traversing a portion of the Waitakerei Block
No. 1A (No. 1902), the south-eastern side of which commences at a point on the western side of the road hereinbefore described 8188 links, more or less, from the West
Coast; and proceeds south-westerly for a distance of 1082
links, more or less, to a point on the West Coast distant 650
links, more or less, to the southward of the mouth of the
Waiti Stream,
As the same are delineated on Maps Nos. 6249 and 6250,
deposited in the Survey Office, Auckland.
Date of Governor’s warrant, 22nd May, 1891.
