Notice to Mariners, No. 32 of 1892.

Marine Department, Wellington, 31st October, 1892.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, is published for general information.

R. J. SEDDON.

BASS STRAIT.—REPORTED UNCHARTED ROCK.—WARNING.
It has been reported that on the 25th ultimo the sea was observed from Wilson’s Promontory to be breaking east of the Crocodile Rock and in a line bearing south-east by south half-south from the promontory. From these bearings it seems probable that the Cutter Rock caused the breakers reported, but a search will be made in the locality during the present month with a view to determine whether the breakers were caused by an uncharted rock or not.

Notice is hereby given that the following lights will be established on and after the dates mentioned:—

CUNNINGHAM.—GIPPSLAND LAKES.
Tuesday, 1st November, 1892, a red light, visible in clear weather about three miles distant, will be exhibited about 25ft. above high water, from the end of the Cunningham new jetty.

SNAKE ISLAND.—ENTRANCE TO PORT ALBERT.
Tuesday, 1st November, 1892, a green light, visible in clear weather about four miles distant, will be exhibited about 40ft. above high water, from the top of the old lighthouse-tower on Snake Island.

PORT CAMPBELL, SOUTH COAST OF AUSTRALIA.
Thursday, 1st December, 1892, a red light, visible in clear weather about three miles distant, will be exhibited about 25ft. above high water, from the end of the Port Campbell jetty.

Note: The two latter lights will not in any way mark the fairway-entrance, and should only be used for the purpose of indicating the mariner’s approach to such entrance.

ALEXR. WILSON, Engineer in Charge, Ports and Harbours.

Department of Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, 4th October, 1892.
