Rural Lands in the Canterbury Land District open for Sale or Selection.

GLASGOW, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the one hundred and thirty-sixth section of “The Land Act, 1892” (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), I, David, Earl of Glasgow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection, after the lapse of a period of not less than thirty days from the date of the first public notification hereof in the New Zealand Gazette, in the manner and upon the conditions mentioned in the said Act, and at the price per acre stated in the said Schedule.

This reserve is situated at the junction of the Harewood and Eyre Roads, on the south side of the Eyre River, about three and a half miles south-west of Horrelville Railway-station, and comprises light, stony, open plain land.

This section is situated between the Opihi and Tengawai Rivers, about seven miles north-east of Albury, and comprises steep, open, rough fern land on the south-east part, the remainder being good open tussock land capable of being ploughed. There is no permanent water on the block. The road giving access for the last two miles is only partly formed.

FIRST-CLASS LAND.—UNSURVEYED.

This section is situated on the south-west side of the Rakaia River, adjacent to Blackford Station homestead, about twelve miles north-west of Methven, and comprises the lower slopes of the range, and consists of very stony land, subject to overflow of streams, and generally of inferior quality. The elevation of the land is about 1,500ft. above sea-level.

This section is situated on the Blackford Station Road, about half a mile nearer Methven than the last-described section, and comprises level and undulating open grassed agricultural land of good quality.

This section is situated on the Blackford Station Road, in the same locality as the last-described section, about ten and a half miles from Methven. The front portion comprises the high upper open terrace-flat, which consists of good agricultural land, part stony; the eastern portion falls away some hundreds of feet, and is rough and stony in places, with some swamp land. On the whole, the section is of good average quality, and suitable for occupation by a small farmer. The elevation above the sea is about 1,500ft.

This section is situated two and a half miles north-east of Pudding Hill, about two miles off the Alford Forest-Rakaia Gorge Bridge Road, and about ten and three-quarter miles from Methven. It comprises hilly, stony, partly open, grass, scrub, and bush lands, of fair quality, suitable for grazing. The elevation above sea-level is about 2,100ft.

This section is situated adjacent to and at the back of Mr. G. Lambie’s property, about four and a half miles from Springburn Railway-station, and about three miles (by a partly-formed road) off the Mount Somers and Alford Forest main road. It comprises rough hilly land, of inferior quality, generally covered with birch bush.

This section is situated on the Mackenzie County Road, about a mile and a half north-east from Burke’s Pass Township, and comprises open hilly land of fair quality. The elevation above sea-level is about 1,900ft.

SECOND-CLASS LAND.—UNSURVEYED.

This section is situated adjacent to and at the back of Messrs. Peache and Lambie’s properties, about four and a half miles and five and three-quarter miles from Springburn and Mount Somers Railway-stations respectively, and about three miles (by a partly-formed road) off the Mount Somers and Alford Forest main road. The area comprises hilly and undulating land, rocky in places and wet in others. About 80 acres is covered with mixed scrubby bush, and most of the remainder of the block with stunted manuka, cottonwood, fern, flax, &c., and more or less grass. Some of the slopes are capable of being ploughed. The soil is generally of a clayey nature.
