depend on being clear of the spit, and in the channel,
directly the light changes from red to white, but should
steer as heretofore by the leading-lights. Likewise that a
wire cable has been stretched from Bushy Island (Cap and
Bonnet) to the mainland for the use of the station; there-
fore in future there will be no passage for vessels on the
south-west side of these islets.

Notice to Mariners, No. 30 of 1892.
ADDITIONAL BEACON, MANUKAU HARBOUR.

Wellington, N.Z., 18th October, 1892.
NOTICE is hereby given that a triangular beacon, built
of wood, surmounted by an iron globular cage, the
whole painted black, has been erected in Manukau Harbour,
on the northern side of the channel, opposite the present red
beacon that marks the reef of rocks on the southern side
near Onehunga.
At low-water springs the red beacon is dry all round, with
12ft. water at a distance of 40ft.; the black beacon has 4ft.
water all round, mud and shingle. The distance across be-
tween the two beacons is 200ft., with 3 fathoms in mid-
channel, shoaling gradually towards the sides. Masters are
cautioned against approaching these beacons too near.

SUVA HARBOUR AND APPROACH TO NOUMEA, NEW
CALEDONIA.
(Hydrographic Notice, No. 4.)
“Orlando,” at Sydney, 16th September, 1892.
THE following information is hereby promulgated:—
HYDROGRAPHIC REMARKS.
Suva Harbour.
The light-vessel lies half a cable to the southward of her
position as charted, and shows two white lights vertical from
sunset to sunrise.
The white buoy shown as placed 3½ cables to the south-
ward of Suva light-vessel, starboard-hand entering, now lies
¼ of a cable S.W. of light-vessel’s present position, in 21ft.
water.
Another white buoy has been placed N.E. 40 fathoms from
light-vessel, in 23ft. low water.
The black buoy on port-hand entering lies about 1 cable
south of its charted position.
The black buoy on port-hand entrance to Nai-Ngaloa,
Ngaloa Harbour, is missing.
The black buoy shown as lying in 13 fathoms off the spit
extending from Low Clifty Point lies ¼ cable N.W. by N. of
its charted position, and in 12ft. of water.
Vessels entering Suva Harbour (of deep draught) should
steer well past the light-vessel, on the leading marks, until
Suva Pier head bears E. ½ S.
Charts affected: No. 1757, Nukulau Island to Namuka
Island.

Approach to Noumea, New Caledonia.
Coëtlogon Reef Beacon: This beacon is not in position.
White Obelisk on Te-Ndu Island: This beacon is on the
island and not on the reef as charted.
Laréguère Reef: This reef now has about 1ft. of white
sand on it at high water.
Charts affected: No. 2907, Uen Island to St. Vincent Port;
and No. 936B, New Caledonia, S.E. part.

page 568.
Hydrographic Memoranda Nos. 5 and 6 of 1891 are hereby
cancelled.

Bonus for the Manufacture of Pig-iron from Ironsand
or Iron-ore.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of £1 per ton will
be paid on the production of the first 500 tons of pig-
iron of marketable quality manufactured in the colony
after this date from magnetic or titaniferous ironsand or
iron-ore, all material, fuel, and fluxes being the produce
of New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to
say:—

The bonus must be claimed before the 31st March,
-
The bonus will be payable in instalments of £50 as
each lot of 50 tons of iron is manufactured, on the certifi-
cate of an officer appointed by the Minister of Mines that the
iron is of good marketable quality. -
In the event of more than one person manufacturing
the required quality of pig-iron before the date named,
inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when,
if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a
bonus, the amount will be divided; but in no case shall the
total amount of money paid by way of bonus exceed £500. -
The iron in respect of which any bonus is claimed and
the ironsand or ore from which it is manufactured will be
examined by the officer aforesaid, who may require proof
that not only the ore, but that the lime, coal, and any other
material used in the manufacture, is of genuine New Zealand
production, and that sales of pig-iron have been made at
fair market prices.

Bonus for the Manufacture of Salt.

Wellington, 24th February, 1892.
NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of £1 per ton will
be paid on the production of the first 500 tons of salt,
exclusively either by evaporation of salt-water or from rock
mined in the colony, on the following conditions, that is to
say:—

The bonus must be claimed before the 31st March,
-
Not more than £250 will be paid for salt manufactured
in the North Island, and not more than £250 for salt manu-
factured in the South Island. -
The bonus will be payable in instalments of £50 as each
lot of 50 tons of salt is manufactured, on the certificate of
an officer appointed by the Minister of Mines that the salt is
of good marketable quality. -
In the event of more than one person manufacturing
the stated quantity of salt in the North or South Islands
respectively before the 31st March, 1893, inquiry will be
made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found
that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus in either
the North Island or the South Island, the amount will be
divided, but in no case shall more than £250 be paid for salt
manufactured in the North Island and £250 for salt manu-
factured in the South Island. -
The salt in respect of which any bonus is claimed and
the material used in its manufacture will be examined by
the officer aforesaid, who may require proof that the salt is of
genuine New Zealand production, and that sales have been
made at fair market prices.
