  1. Special Order notifying the Intention of the Patea West Road Board to raise the Sum of £1,000 by way of Loan, under the Provisions of “The Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1886.”

Resolved, That the following special order, made at last meeting, of the intention of the Board to borrow £1,000, be now confirmed:—

  1. That it is proposed to grade and form portions of the Ball Road, from the Main County Road to Wilford Road, as shown on a plan prepared for that purpose, and now deposited at the office of the Board, Patea.

  2. That the sum of £1,000 be raised under the provisions of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act for that purpose.

  3. That the cost of raising the loan and the first year’s interest be paid out of the loan.

  4. That a special rate of ½d. in the pound sterling be levied on the rateable property within the Alton Special Rating District formed for that purpose, and defined by the plan of same deposited in the Board’s office; and that the said rate be payable on the 1st day of September in each year.

I certify that the above two special orders have been duly made as by law required.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the Senior Examination of January, 1894, the period of literature will be the reign of Queen Anne, and the special books will be Shakespeare’s King Henry V. and Lamb’s Essays of Elia.

Altering Time of Meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board.

IT is hereby notified, for public information, that His Excellency the Governor has, in pursuance of subsection (1) of section 43 of “The Land Act, 1885,” approved the following resolution of the Land Board of the Land District of Hawke’s Bay:—

“That the ordinary meetings of the Land Board of the Land District of Hawke’s Bay shall be held on every third Wednesday in each month, at 10 a.m., commencing on Wednesday, the 21st day of September, 1892, at 10 a.m., instead of 10.30 a.m.”

Containing 2,640 acres, situated in the Pihanga and Rangipo Survey Districts, being the whole of the land comprised in, and declared by, an order of the Native Land Court, made at Tapuaeharuru, on the 24th day of September, 1887, to be the property of Her Majesty. [Deed No. 721, Wellington.]

TE KAPUA.

Containing 21,878 acres, situated in the Maungakaretu, Ohinewairua, and Tiriraukawa Survey Districts, being the whole of the land comprised in Certificates of Title Nos. 25, 26, and 27 of the Native Land Court, Wanganui District, declared by three several orders of the said Court, made at Wanganui on the 23rd day of November, 1891, to be the property of Her Majesty. [Deed No. 715, Wellington.]


Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke’s Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable for two years, are offered for competition. One of these scholarships, to be called the senior scholarship, is open to all Maoris under sixteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination; the other two scholarships are junior scholarships, and are open to all Maoris under fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the date of the examination who have not been pupils at Te Aute or St. Stephen’s, and whose attendance at school during the previous year is considered by the Inspector of Native Schools to have been satisfactory. The senior scholarship is offered for competition among Maori boys on the conditions laid down in the regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in the supplementary regulations that have been sent out to all teachers. Candidates for the junior scholarships will be examined in the subjects specified for Standard IV. in the Native Schools Code, 1886. The questions set will, however, be more difficult than those given at the standard examinations. The examination will be held at convenient centres on the 19th and 20th December, 1892.
