This block is situate twenty-one miles and eleven chains from Stratford by the East Road, which is all under contract as a cart-road; about nineteen miles have been formed, and the first three miles metalled. The whole of the block is good land, being papa or blue-clay formation. The average height of the central ridge above the Mangaotuku and Mahakau Valleys is about 450ft.; the leading spurs which trend thence towards those valleys descend with unusual regularity in Sections 1 and 5, Block X. The predominant timber is tawa, with some very good rimu in moderate quantity scattered throughout, also a little totara and maire; on the low-lying moist and wet ground white-pine (kahikatea) grows, sometimes in thick clumps; a very little black-birch will be found on the tops of some of the highest hills, also a little tawhero. A sum of money has been included in the price to cover cost of roading without metalling. It is proposed to make the East Road a cart-road, and the Akama and Kirai roads, and the Mohakau (as far as the western corner of Section 11, Block X.), as bridle-tracks.
As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this twenty-third day of August, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-two.
JOHN McKENZIE,
Minister of Lands.
