CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF “THE PATENTS ACT, 1890,” AND OF
“THE TRADE-MARKS ACT, 1890,” TO APPLY TO THE COLONY
OF NEW ZEALAND.

At the Executive Council Chamber, Melbourne, the 18th
day of July, 1892.

Present:

His Excellency the Governor,
Mr. Shiels, Mr. McLean, Mr. Outtrim, Mr. Turner,
Mr. Gavan Duffy.

WHEREAS by the 54th section of “The Patents Act, 1890,”
it is, amongst other things, enacted that the Governor in
Council may make any arrangement with the Government or
Governments of any Australian Colony, or with the Govern-
ment of the Colony of New Zealand, or of the Colony of Fiji,
for the mutual protection of inventions, and that the provi-
sions of the now reciting section shall apply only to such of
the colonies aforesaid to which the Governor from time to
time, by Order in Council, declares them to be applicable:

And whereas by the 31st section of “The Trade-marks
Act, 1890,” it is enacted, amongst other things, that if the
Governor in Council is pleased to make any arrangement
with the Government of any British possession for the mutual
protection of trade-marks, and that the provisions of the now
reciting section shall apply to such of the British possessions
with respect to which the Governor from time to time, by
Order in Council, declares them to be applicable:

And whereas the Governor in Council has made arrange-
ments with the Government of the Colony of New Zealand
for the mutual protection of patents and trade-marks:

Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor, by and with
the advice and consent of the Executive Council, doth hereby
order that all the provisions contained in section 54 of “The
Patents Act, 1890,” shall apply to inventions in respect of
which application for protection has been made in the Colony
of New Zealand, and that the provisions of section 31 of
“The Trade-marks Act, 1890,” shall apply to trade-marks in
respect of which application has been made in the Colony of
New Zealand, or which is entitled to protection in such
colony.

And, in further pursuance and exercise of the power and
authority aforesaid, and with the like advice and consent as
aforesaid, it is ordered that this Order in Council shall take
effect from and after the 1st day of August next.

And the Hon. William Shiels, Her Majesty’s Attorney-
General for Victoria, shall give the necessary directions
herein accordingly.

Notice to Mariners, No. 25 of 1892.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Local Marine Board, Newcastle, New South Wales,
is published for general information.

On and after Monday, the 25th instant, the rock-cutter
“Poseidon” will be moored on the south side of the fairway,
and to the eastward of the lightship, for the purpose of
deepening operations, working occasionally into mid-channel.
Masters of steamers passing this vessel must exercise the
greatest caution, in order to avoid fouling the moorings.

During the night the “Poseidon” will exhibit a bright
light at each end until this work is completed.

Bonus for the Manufacture of Pig-iron from Ironsand
or Iron-ore.

Mines Office,
Wellington, 24th February, 1892.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of £1 per ton will
be paid on the production of the first 500 tons of pig-
iron of marketable quality manufactured in the colony
after this date from magnetic or titaniferous ironsand or
iron-ore, all material, fuel, and fluxes being the produce
of New Zealand, on the following conditions, that is to
say:—

  1. The bonus must be claimed before the 31st March,

  2. The bonus will be payable in instalments of £50 as
    each lot of 50 tons of iron is manufactured, on the certifi-
    cate of an officer appointed by the Minister of Mines that the
    iron is of good marketable quality.

  3. In the event of more than one person manufacturing
    the required quality of pig-iron before the date named,
    inquiry will be made by the officer above referred to, when,
    if it is found that each applicant is equally entitled to a
    bonus, the amount will be divided ; but in no case shall the
    total amount of money paid by way of bonus exceed £500.

  4. The iron in respect of which any bonus is claimed and
    the ironsand or ore from which it is manufactured will be
    examined by the officer aforesaid, who may require proof
    that not only the ore, but that the lime, coal, and any other
    material used in the manufacture, is of genuine New Zealand
    production, and that sales of pig-iron have been made at
    fair market prices.

Bonus for the Manufacture of Salt.

Mines Department,
Wellington, 24th February, 1892.

NOTICE is hereby given that a bonus of £1 per ton will
be paid on the production of the first 500 tons of salt,
exclusively either by evaporation of salt-water or from rock
mined in the colony, on the following conditions, that is to
say :—

  1. The bonus must be claimed before the 31st March,

  2. Not more than £250 will be paid for salt manufactured
    in the North Island, and not more than £250 for salt manu-
    factured in the South Island.

  3. The bonus will be payable in instalments of £50 as each
    lot of 50 tons of salt is manufactured, on the certificate of
    an officer appointed by the Minister of Mines that the salt is
    of good marketable quality.

  4. In the event of more than one person manufacturing
    the stated quantity of salt in the North or South Islands
    respectively before the 31st March, 1893, inquiry will be
    made by the officer above referred to, when, if it is found
    that each applicant is equally entitled to a bonus in either
    the North Island or the South Island, the amount will be
    divided, but in no case shall more than £250 be paid for salt
    manufactured in the North Island and £250 for salt manu-
    factured in the South Island.

  5. The salt in respect of which any bonus is claimed and
    the material used in its manufacture will be examined by
    the officer aforesaid, who may require proof that the salt is of
    genuine New Zealand production, and that sales have been
    made at fair market prices.

Civil Service Senior Examination.

IN pursuance of regulations under “The Civil Service
Reform Act, 1886,” notice is hereby given that for the
Senior Examination of January, 1893, the period of litera-
ture will be the reign of Elizabeth, and the special books
will be Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macaulay’s Essays on
Bacon and Walpole.

The Reverend William Lambert, B.A.,
has voluntarily surrendered his license to officiate in the
Diocese of Waiapu.

His name has been withdrawn from the list of Officiating
Ministers under “The Marriage Act, 1880,” at the request of
the Bishop.
