Examination of Mine Managers and Engine-drivers.

A N examination of candidates for certificates as First-
and Second-class Mine Managers and Engine-drivers
under “The Mining Act, 1891,” and “The Coal-mines Act,
1891,” will be held on the 9th August, 1892, and three fol-
lowing days, at places to be hereafter named. All applica-
tions, with necessary certificates, and fee of £1, must be
addressed to “The Secretary of the Board of Examiners
under the Mining Act or Coal-mines Act, Wellington,” and
must be received before the 8th July, or they will not be
dealt with until the February examination.

Water taken from the Clydebourne or Big Kuri River for
the Purposes of the Hurunui – Bluff Railway and
Branches.
A NOTIFICATION.
W HEREAS by subsection one of section sixteen of “The
Public Works Act 1882 Amendment Act (No. 2),
1885,” it is enacted that the Minister for Public Works
may from time to time, in the manner provided by “The
Public Works Act, 1882,” and any Act amending the same,
impound, divert, and take any water from any stream or
running water, or may purchase or acquire any right or
interest therein, for the purpose (inter alia) of supplying
water for the use of any railway, and the engines or ma-
chinery used thereon: And whereas by section twenty of
“The Government Railways Act, 1887,” it is enacted that
all powers conferred upon Her Majesty, or the Governor in
Council, or the Governor, or the Minister under or by virtue
of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” or its amendments, or
under any other Act in force prior to the passing of “The
Public Works Act, 1882,” or under any special Act, so far as
any such Act respectively relates to the management, work-
ing, and maintenance of railways, and all matters or things
done or to be done, and all rights and privileges accrued or
accruing under or by virtue of any such Act, shall be exer-
cised, enforced, and enjoyed by the Commissioners in the
same way as Her Majesty, or the Governor in Council, or
the Governor, or the Minister might have exercised, enforced,
or enjoyed the same but for the passing of this Act; and,
with respect thereto, the Commissioners shall be substituted
for Her Majesty, the Governor in Council, or the Governor,
or the Minister, as the case may be: And whereas by sec-
tion twenty-four of “The Government Railways Act, 1887,”
it is enacted that, where it may be necessary for the purposes
of “The Public Works Act, 1882,” or any amendment
thereof, and this Act to make any Order in Council, Procla-
mation, or other instrument, it shall be sufficient if the
Commissioners shall make, issue, or execute such instrument
in such manner as they deem necessary, and, when required
by law, shall notify the same in the Gazette; and any instru-
ment authorised under “The Public Works Act, 1882,” or
any amendment thereof, to be made, executed, or issued by
the Governor in Council, the Governor, or the Minister, for
all or any of the purposes aforesaid, may be made, executed,
or issued by the Commissioners in such manner as may be
necessary to give effect to “The Public Works Act, 1882,” or
any such amendment and this Act: And whereas it is de-
sirable to impound, divert, and take water from the stream
called the Clydebourne or Big Kuri River for the purpose
of supplying water for the use of the Hurunui–Bluff Railway
and branches, and the engines and machinery used thereon :
Now, therefore, the New Zealand Railway Commissioners,
in exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities con-
ferred on them by “The Public Works Act, 1882,” and the
Acts amending the same, and “The Government Railways
Act, 1887,” and of every other power and authority enabling
them in that behalf, do hereby notify and declare that so
much of the waters of the Clydebourne or Big Kuri River
as will flow through and can be diverted by means of an iron
pipe of the diameter of three inches, inserted in the said
river where the same is intersected by the boundary-line
between sections numbered respectively fourteen and twenty-
six, Block I., on the record map of the Otepopo District, in
the Provincial District of Otago, in the Colony of New Zea-
land, are hereby taken for the purposes of the Hurunui–Bluff
Railway and branches, and the engines and machinery used
thereon, and will hereafter be impounded and diverted for
such purposes.
Given under the common seal of the New Zealand
Railway Commissioners, at Wellington, this
(t.s.) third day of June, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and ninety-two.

These reserves are situated in the Township of South Rakaia,
and will be let on a yearly tenancy, renewable by the Land
Board from year to year for a period of seven years, unless
the land is required by Government for any purpose. The
lessees will have the right of occupying and using the lands
for grazing purposes, but will be prohibited from cropping
the same.

This reserve is situated in the bed of the Rakaia River,
adjoning the properties of the New Zealand and Australian
Land Company and Mr. P. H. Cannon, to the north-westward
of Dobbin's Ford. The term of lease will be seven years,
subject to the right of the Crown to terminate it by a year's
notice if the land is required by Government for any purpose.
The lessee will have the right of occupying and using the
land for grazing purposes, but will be prohibited from
cropping the same.

This section is situated immediately below the high terrace
on the south-west side of the south branch of the Ashburton
River. It has frontage on the Shepherd's Bush Road, about
one and three-quarter miles north-east of the Westerfield
Railway-station, and is distant about eight miles in a north-
westerly direction from the Town of Ashburton. The section
comprises soil of fair quality, but is liable to flood.
A deposit of one-fifth of the purchase-money shall be paid
on the fall of the hammer, and the balance, together with a
Crown-grant fee of £1, within thirty days thereafter, or the
deposit will be forfeited and the sale cancelled.
There are no restrictions or limitations incumbent upon
purchasers of cash lands at auction.
Plans may be seen and further particulars obtained at this
office.
