Lands open for Application under Village-homestead Special Settlement Conditions in the Makuri, Ngaturi, Makairo, Tutaekara, and Mangaone Village Settlements, Wellington Land District.

IT is hereby notified that the under-mentioned lands will be open for application, under the village-homestead system, on Thursday, the 4th February, 1892. Applications must be made on the proper forms, and will be received at this office, and also at the County Council Offices, Pahiatua. They must be made in person to the Commissioner of Crown Lands or other officer of the department, who will attend there to receive them, but they will not be received at Pahiatua by post. Application-forms and full particulars can be obtained at this office.
These lands are being opened for the purpose of providing homestead-sites for intending settlers. Holders of other lands exceeding one acre in extent are not eligible as selectors. Any person putting in an application in contravention of the conditions under which the land is opened is liable to be prosecuted for making a false declaration, and any section obtained thereby is, in accordance with the conditions, forfeited. Alleged ignorance of the conditions will not, after this notice, be accepted as an excuse for persons putting in applications who hold other lands.

These sections adjoin the Town of Makuri, which is about fifteen miles from Pahiatua, eleven miles of which is by a formed dray-road and four miles a horse-road only. The whole road, however, between Pahiatua Township and Makuri Village will shortly be completed throughout for cart-traffic. The land generally consists of undulating country, ranging from level to somewhat steep slopes. The soil is good throughout, being of limestone formation, and the timber is of a mixed character with thick undergrowth.

The locality of the above is at the end of the Toritea Road on the east bank of the Tiraumea River, and distant about six miles and a half from the Pahiatua in an easterly direction, and is approached by formed roads to the river. The land is, generally speaking, level; soil fair to good, cleared of timber, and sown with English grass.

These sections are situated nine miles and three-quarters from the Townships of Pahiatua and Woodville, and are approached by a formed road; the soil is good, the general character of the land being level, with low hills and easy slopes; the formation is shingle, overlying papa. The timber is chiefly tawa, with rimu, rata, pukatea, kahikatea, &c., intermixed, and an occasional totara tree; the under-scrub is mahoe, kamakama, supplejacks, matipo, kotukotuku, &c.

The locality of the above is on the main coach-road between Woodville and Masterton, about six and a half miles south of Pahiatua. The village is bounded on three sides by the McKenzie Special Settlement; the land is perfectly level, the soil being rich alluvial and covered with heavy mixed bush.

These sections are situated about six miles south of Pahiatua, on the east side of and fronting on to the main coach-road between Masterton and Woodville. The entire area is perfectly level and dry with excellent soil. The timber consists of tawa, hinau, rimu, rata, kahikatea, mahoe, kawakawa, &c., with the usual undergrowth.

These sections are situated on the east side of the main coach-road between Woodville and Masterton, about seven and a quarter miles south of Pahiatua. The soil is rich alluvial, inclined to be sandy, and the entire area is level. Native clearings of 8 acres and 3½ acres have been made on Sections 16 and 17 respectively. With this exception, the land is covered with forest, consisting chiefly of tawa, rata, kahikatea, horopito, patete, mahoe, kareao, &c., with the usual underscrub.
