Notice of Application to amend Specification.

Patent Office,
Wellington, 24th December, 1891.

A REQUEST to be allowed to amend the specification relating to the under-mentioned application has been received, and is open to public inspection at this office. Any person may, at any time within one month from the date of this Gazette, give me notice in writing, in duplicate, of opposition to the amendment, stating in such notice the particular grounds of objection. A fee of 10s. is payable with such notice :—

No. 1237.—EDWARD JOHN PEARSON, of Hamilton East, Auckland, New Zealand, Carpenter. An invention for carbolic sand-soap.

The proposed amendments consist in (1) inserting the following words, figures, &c., between lines 4 and 5 of the schedule, viz.: “In order that my invention may be more easily understood, I will now proceed to describe the same. My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated below, viz.:—

“Tallow .. .. .. 15lb.
Caustic soda .. .. 4lb.
Sifted pumice-sand .. 78lb.
Calvert’s carbolic acid, No. 5 .. 3lb.
——
100lb.

These proportions may be varied, more especially if the quality of the ingredients vary. In carrying out my invention I place the caustic soda and tallow in a suitable vessel containing a quantity of cold water, which for the above proportions should be 8 gallons, and boil the same together till the mixture become soap. I then add the sifted pumice-sand and the carbolic acid, preferably Calvert’s No. 5, in the above proportions. After thoroughly mixing the whole together in the boiler, either by hand or by a mixing-machine fixed therein, I pour the mixture into moulds and allow the same to remain until cold. It is then turned out of the said moulds and dried by natural or other means. (2.) Striking out the words ‘Combination of carbolic acid with fine sand and soap’ in the 2nd and 3rd lines of the claim, and inserting in place thereof the words ‘herein described cleansing and disinfecting composition, manufactured in the manner and in the proportions substantially as specified.’ (3.) By striking out the words ‘or anything’ in line 9 of the schedule, and inserting in place thereof the words ‘and other similar objects.’”

The reasons given for seeking to make this amendment are as follows, viz.: To give more minute details of the proportions of the ingredients used in the manufacture of my soap, and to better define what is claimed.
