No. 5281.—7th November, 1891.—Thomas Crompton, of
Christchurch, New Zealand, Ironfounder. An invention for
a new cooking-stove, to be called "The Settlers' Universal
Cooking-stove." (Specification, 4s.; drawings, 5s.)

Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand, Watchmaker. An
invention entitled "Bartlett's Racing Clock," for starting,
handicapping, and timing races.
No. 5257. — 31st October, 1891. — Angleson Edward
Adams, of Invermark House, Dixon Street, Wellington,
New Zealand, Chairmaker. An invention for a device for
indicating the time at which a lodger desires to be
awakened and the name of refreshment he requires, to be
called "The Bedroom Watch."
No. 5259.—3rd November, 1891.—William Brazenall,
Engineer, and Matthew Byrnes, Steamboat Proprietor,
both of Sydney, New South Wales. An invention for im-
provements in the method of effecting the smokeless com-
bustion of fuel in boiler-furnaces, and in apparatus for
aiding combustion in, and preventing the emission of smoke
from, such furnaces.
No. 5265. — 3rd November, 1891.—Thomas Smith, of
Hanover Street, Windsor, near Melbourne, Victoria, Gas
Engineer. An invention for an improved method of, and
apparatus to be used in the, manufacture and storage of
inflammable gas for general purposes.
No. 5277. — 7th November, 1891.—Enoch Hallett, of
Meeanee, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, Surveyor. An inven-
tion for an improved mode of clearing dags or locks of wool
from sheep-dung.
No. 5279.—5th November, 1891.—William Vaile, of
Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand, Draper. An inven-
tion entitled "William Vaile's Patent Self-acting Gum-
cleaner."
No. 5282.—10th November, 1891.—William Troutbeck,
of Patrick Street, Stawell, Victoria, Engineer. An inven-
tion for an improved sheep-shearing machine.

Notice of Application to amend Specification.
Patent Office,
Wellington, 12th November, 1891.
A REQUEST to be allowed to amend the specification
relating to the under-mentioned application has been
received, and is open to public inspection at this office. Any
person may, at any time within one month from the date of
this Gazette, give me notice in writing, in duplicate, of opposi-
tion to the amendment, stating in such notice the parti-
cular grounds of objection. A fee of 10s. is payable with
such notice:—
No. 4541.—John Cameron Fraser, of Coromandel, Auck-
land, New Zealand, Saw-mill Proprietor. An invention
entitled "Ore-grinding and Amalgamating Pan."
The proposed amendment consists in inserting the follow-
ing words, viz.: "is of any length, and may even continue
completely around the pan," between the words "iron" and
"and" in line 19 of page 3 of the specification.
The reason given for seeking to make this amendment is
"that not inserting the words was a defect in the original
specification, and that no fresh claim is made."

of Christchurch, New Zealand, Merchants and Im-
porters, have applied to register, under "The Patents,
Designs, and Trade-marks Act, 1889," the trade-mark of
which the following is a representation:—

The applicants claim, as the essential particulars of the
above-represented trade-mark, the device and the word
"Carbine," and disclaim any right to the exclusive use of
the word "Cigarettes."
