Case 958.—CLAUDE FERRIER, of the Union S.S. Company, Dunedin, New Zealand, a mariner, aged twenty-four years, for rescuing a man, named Graham, a fireman, of the s.s. “Cairntoul,” aged thirty-eight years, from drowning, at Lyttelton, on the 20th May, 1890. Award, certificate of merit.

Case 950.—CHARLES ROLTON, of Thames, New Zealand, aged thirty-three years, fisherman, JOSEPH CROSS, of the same place, aged forty-five years, and ANDREW REITMAN, of the same place, aged twenty years, all fishermen, for rescuing Captain Cameron, of the “Maud Graham,” Lyttelton, New Zealand, master mariner, aged about thirty years, from drowning, at the mouth of the Thames River, on the 10th December, 1890. Captain Cameron was out sailing alone in a hard gale of wind, when his boat capsized. Award, certificate of merit.

Case 967.—JOSEPH CROSS, of Thames, New Zealand, aged forty-five years. (See Case 950.) Award, certificate of merit.

Case 968.—ANDREW REITMAN, of Thames, New Zealand, aged twenty years. (See Case 950.) Award, certificate of merit.

Case 985.—HARRY HOWARD GOODWIN, of Maidstone, Kent, England, an apprentice on the ship “Persian Empire,” aged eighteen years, HENRY THOMAS, of ——, A.B. on ship “Persian Empire,” aged thirty years, and HENRY TALBOT, aged twenty-two years, third officer of the ship “Persian Empire,” rescued John Hutley, aged about twenty years, his sister Mary Hutley, aged about fifteen years, and Emma Keane, aged about fifteen years, all of Auckland, New Zealand, from drowning, in the Auckland Harbour, on the 30th March, 1890. Mr. J. Hutley, his sister Mary, and Emma Keane went for a sail in a dingy. When in mid-stream, near the Railway Wharf, a sudden gust of wind capsized the dingy about thirty yards from the “Persian Empire.” Goodwin, Thomas, and Talbot jumped overboard to the rescue; the two former reached and relieved Mr. Hutley of the two girls, who were being carried away by a strong tide, and held them till picked up by the ferry-steamer “Britannia.” Mr. Hutley was much exhausted. Mr. Talbot was believed to have been sucked under the paddle-wheels of the “Britannia” and killed, as he was a strong swimmer, but was never seen again. Award, bronze medal.
