hereinbefore described, on the road opposite to the north-western corner of Section 14560, Hurstt Survey District; and proceeding generally north-easterly and easterly along the road on the south-eastern side of Reserve 1377, and through Sections 22992, 22081, 12361, 9980, 12361 (aforesaid), 9504, 9982, 22546, and 23202, across a road and through Sections 9514, 9497, and 9514 (aforesaid), and across a road to Reserve 718.
Miln’s Branch Race.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in the Hurstt and Southbridge Survey Districts, commencing at Carroll’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, in Section 9109, Hurstt Survey District; and proceeding generally south-westerly and easterly through the said Section 9109, across a road and through Sections 7090 and 7089 to Stony Gully Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, at the road forming the eastern boundary of the said Section 7089.
Easbury Branch Race Extension.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in the Hurstt Survey District, commencing at Easbury Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, at the northernmost corner of Section 11312; and proceeding generally southerly through the said Section 11312, across a road and through Sections 10601 and 10739, through Reserve 1244, across a road, and through Sections 10751 and 10411, and along the road fronting Section 7090 to Miln’s Branch Race, hereinbefore described.
Cowan’s Branch Race.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in Southbridge Survey District, commencing at Hurst’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, on the road forming the eastern boundary of Section 6930; and proceeding generally south-easterly across a road and through Sections 6834, 6945, 6069, 6070, 6834 (aforesaid), 6070, and 6069 (aforesaid), and along the road forming the eastern boundary of the said Section 6070, across that road and through Section 5106 to a point eastward of the Southern Trunk Railway-line.
Willis’s Branch Race.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in the Hurstt and Southbridge Survey Districts, commencing at Stony Gully Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, in Section 4764, Hurstt Survey District; and proceeding generally south-easterly through the said Section 4764, across a road and through Section 4801, across a road and through Section 6930 to Hurst’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, on the road forming the eastern boundary of the last-mentioned section.
McVinnie’s Branch Race Extension.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in Southbridge Survey District, commencing at the termination of McVinnie’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, on the western boundary of Reserve 731; and proceeding generally south-easterly through the said Reserve 731, across a road and through Sections 5514 and 3330 to the eastern boundary-line of the latter section, crossing the Southern Trunk Railway-line and road through the aforesaid Section 3330.
NOTE.—All the foregoing races are supplied from the River Rakaia.
ELLESMERE WATER-RACES.
Nixon’s Branch Race Extension.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in Southbridge Survey District, commencing at the termination of Nixon’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, in Section 21599; and proceeding generally south-westerly through the said Section 21599, across a road and through Section 14458 and Reserves 1433, 351, and 731 to McVinnie’s Race Extension, hereinbefore described.
Quirk’s Branch Race Extension.
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in the Leeston and Southbridge Survey Districts, commencing at the termination of Quirk’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, in Reserve 1184, Leeston Survey District; and proceeding generally south-easterly through the said Reserve 1184 and Section 10942, across a road and through Section 5589, along the north-eastern side of the road forming the south-western boundary of the said Section 5589, across that road and through Section 7849, and along the road forming the north-eastern boundary of Sections 7340 and 5709, across that road and along its north-eastern side to the southernmost corner of Section 5206, and across the said road to the creek in Section 3330.
Dunsandel Branch Race Extension (altered).
All that area, 25 links in width, situated in Leeston Survey District, commencing at the northernmost corner of Section 14506; and proceeding generally south-easterly along the road forming the north-eastern boundary of Section 14506, across the said road and through Reserve 1184 to Quirk’s Branch Race, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, is substituted for “All that portion of Dunsandel Branch Race Extension, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 57, 18th October, 1888, commencing at the northernmost corner of Section 14506, and proceeding through that section and across a road to Nixon’s Branch Race, in Section 17823.”
NOTE.—The foregoing races are to be supplied from the River Hororata.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS in the contract bearing date the third day of August, one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight, made between Her Majesty the Queen and the New Zealand Midland Railway Company (Limited), it is, among other things, provided that, subject to the conditions therein contained, all lands within the limits of the authorised area defined in the said contract shall be available for selection by the company, with certain exceptions: And whereas among such exceptions are included all lands which from time to time, in the opinion of the Governor, are or may be required for bonâ fide mining purposes, and the several purposes connected therewith or incidental or conducive thereto, and which lands shall from time to time be set apart and defined by Proclamations to be issued in that behalf; but no more than ten thousand acres shall be so set apart or proclaimed in one block at any one time, and the lands so set apart and proclaimed from time to time shall not, in the aggregate, exceed seven hundred and fifty thousand acres: And whereas, in the opinion of the Governor, the lands described in the Schedule hereto are required for bonâ fide mining purposes and the several purposes connected therewith, and the said lands are comprised in one block, containing ten thousand acres: And whereas it is expedient the said lands should be set apart and defined by this Proclamation:
Now, therefore, I, William Hillier, Earl of Onslow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of all powers and authorities enabling me in this behalf under the hereinbefore-mentioned contract or otherwise, do hereby proclaim and declare that the block of land defined and described in the Schedule hereto is set apart under the provisions of the said contract for bonâ fide mining purposes and the several purposes connected therewith.
SCHEDULE.
Block I., 5,250 acres, more or less, comprising the Kumara Gold-diggings. Bounded towards the north-east by the Teremakau River; towards the south-east by a line bearing 223° 23′ through traverse-take xxv., Kumara to Christchurch Road, to the Loopline Road; thence towards the south-west generally by the said Loopline Road to the Reservoir Reserve; thence by the said Reservoir Reserve and the Loopline Road before mentioned to the Greenstone Road; towards the west generally by the said Greenstone Road, Sections Nos. 1851, 1852, and Educational Endowment Reserve No. 128 to the Borough of Kumara; thence towards the north-west by the Borough of Kumara: exclusive of sold lands and reserves; as the same is delineated on the map marked S.G. 7870, deposited in the Head Office of the Department of Lands and Survey, at Wellington, in the Provincial District of Wellington, and thereon coloured yellow.
