off the north-east point of Penrhyn Island, in about lat. 9° 3' S.
and long. 157° 50' W., and that it extends about five miles
off that point right in the track of vessels coming from Cali-
fornia or British Columbia. For the first two miles from the
point the sea breaks heavily over the reef; then there is
a channel about one and a half miles wide, in which no
bottom was found at 25 fathoms, and outside the channel
there is a rocky patch of about two or three cables in extent,
on which the sea breaks heavily in patches.
Note.—Probably this is the dangerous reef reported to
exist about four miles off the east side of the island. Sailing
directions, South Pacific, Vol. iii., page 114.
Captain Ohlson also reports that there is shoal water off
the north-west end of the island, but that the least water
found was 7 fathoms, half a mile off shore.
