Rural Lands in the Wellington Land District open for Sale or Selection.

ONSLow, Governor.

IN pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the third section of “The Land Act Amendment Act, 1887” (hereinafter termed “the said Act”), I, William Hillier, Earl of Onslow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, having received the report of the Surveyor-General in this behalf, as in the said section is provided, do hereby declare that the rural lands enumerated in the Schedule hereto shall be open for sale or selection, after the lapse of a period of not less than forty-five days from the date of the first public notification hereof, in the manner and upon the conditions mentioned in the said Act, and at the price per acre stated opposite such land in the said Schedule.

SCHEDULE.

WELLINGTON LAND DISTRICT.—OROUA COAL CREEK BLOCK.
— UNSURVEYED LANDS. — FIRST- AND SECOND - CLASS LANDS.

BLOCKS XIV. and XV. Apiti, and Blocks II., III., VI., and VII., Pohangina Survey Districts. 12,000 acres. Price: Cash, 10s. to £1 2s. 6d.; deferred payments, 12s. 6d. to £1 8s. 1½d.; and perpetual-lease rental, 6d. to 1s. 1½d. per acre.

Description of Land: This block is situated between the Oroua River and Coal Creek, and extends from the Wanganui Harbour Board Block northwards for six miles, towards the Feilding Special-settlement Block. The area comprises generally broken and undulating hills, intersected by deep gullies which merge into gorges, there being some small flats on the Oroua River and Coal Creek, and easy faces and flat tops along main ridge and the western slopes towards the Oroua. The block is fairly well watered, and is covered with mixed bush and dense under scrub, including rimu, rata, maire, hinau, titoki, and rewarewa, with two known patches of black birch on the Coal Creek and south boundary, and totara and kahikatea occur in places sufficient generally for homestead purposes; the undergrowth includes karamu, kotukutuku, makomako, rangiora, mahoe, kaiwhiria, houhou, tataromoa, and supplejacks. The formation is papa and sandstone, and the soil, with the exception of patches here and there, varies from fair to good. The block is distant from Feilding (via the Kimbolton Road and Birmingham) about twenty-two miles, eighteen and a half of which is a dray-road, and three and a half miles a formed bridle-track, and horses can be got up the Oroua River-bed and Coal Creek. The south boundary, via the Taonui and Wanganui Harbour Board Block Roads and unformed road-lines, is about twenty-two miles from Feilding. The north end of the block is about three miles distant from the cleared road-lines on the Feilding Special-settlement Block. The country is from 800ft. to 1,800ft. above sea-level, and when brought into cultivation should prove well adapted for pastoral pursuits. The sale-plan represents in full detail the character of country, soil, bush, &c., and the elevation of all parts above sea-level.

Selectors will have the privilege of choosing, subject to reasonable restrictions, the precise locality and area of their future holdings, with the additional advantage of securing good fencing boundaries on ridges and spurs where available.

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor, this seventeenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and ninety.

G. F. RICHARDSON.
