Notice to Mariners, No. 40 of 1890.

Marine Department,
Wellington, 21st November, 1890.

THE following Notices to Mariners, received from the Marine Board, Sydney, New South Wales, and the Marine Board, Hobart, Tasmania, are published for general information.

FRED. WHITAKER,
(For the Minister having charge of the Marine Department.)

WHITE PILE LIGHT, PORT JACKSON.

ON and after the night of Monday, the 17th November, a fixed white light will be exhibited from the platform erected in 22ft. of water on the N.E. extremity of the shoal extending from Shark Island.

This light will be visible from the fairway of the harbour between Shark Point to the N.E. and Point Piper to the S.W., and will be so bright as to be easily distinguished from ordinary lights.

Vessels bound down the harbour are recommended to pass south of Fort Denison, and keep this light on the port bow until Bradley’s Head bears abeam. A course can then be steered for passing through the eastern channel to sea.

Vessels bound up the harbour should give the light a good berth, and round Bradley’s Head reasonably close.

By order.
GEO. S. LINDEMAN, R.N.,
Secretary.

Office of the Marine Board of New South Wales,
Sydney, 30th October, 1890.

EXHIBITION OF FLASHING WHITE LIGHT ON S.W. MAATSUYKER ISLAND, SOUTH COAST OF TASMANIA.

WITH reference to the preliminary notice issued by this Board, dated the 11th July, 1890, it is hereby notified that, on and after the 1st April, 1891, a light will be exhibited from a lighthouse which has been erected on the S.W. Maatsuyker Island, the position and characteristics of which are as follow:—

The lighthouse is situated on the south side of the S.W. Maatsuyker Island, which lies off the south coast of Tasmania, in lat. 43° 39′ 30″ S., long. 146° 17′ 30″ E. (approximate).

The tower is 42ft. in height from base to top of the lantern, and is painted white.

The light will be first order, dioptric group, flashing white light, visible all round the horizon as far as the land will allow, giving a quick double flash at intervals of thirty seconds.

The light will be elevated 350ft. above the mean sea-level, and, allowing 10ft. for the height of the eye, will be seen at a distance of twenty-five miles in clear weather, and at a lesser distance according to the state of the atmosphere.

Master Warden.
