New County of Waiapu divided into Ridings, &c.

A PROCLAMATION.

IN exercise and pursuance of the powers and authorities vested in me by “The Counties Act, 1886,” and “The Waiapu County Act, 1890,” I, William Hillier, Earl of Onslow, the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, do hereby divide the new County of Waiapu, as constituted by the said Acts, into five ridings, to be called the Matakaoa Riding, the Awanui Riding, the Piritarau Riding, the Waipiro Riding, and the Tokomaru Riding, and declare that the boundaries thereof shall be those set forth under the names of the said ridings respectively in the Schedule hereto.

And I do hereby declare that the number of members to be elected for each of the said ridings shall be as follows: For the Matakaoa Riding, one member; for the Awanui Riding, one member; for the Piritarau Riding, two members; for the Waipiro Riding, one member; and for the Tokomaru Riding, one member.

And I do further declare that Friday, the nineteenth day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety, shall be the day upon which the election of the first Council of the said County of Waiapu shall take place; and that Saturday, the twenty-seventh day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety, at two o’clock in the afternoon, shall be the time, and the Courthouse at Awanui shall be the place, at which the first meeting of the said Council shall be held.

SCHEDULE.

RIDINGS OF WAIAPU COUNTY.

Matakaoa Riding.—Bounded towards the north and east by the sea, from Cape Runaway to the Waiapu River; thence towards the south-east by the said Waiapu River to the confluence of the Mangaoporo River with the said Waiapu River; thence towards the south-west by the right bank of the said Mangaoporo River to the northernmost corner of the Rotokautuku No. 1 Block; thence again towards the south-east by the said Rotokautuku No. 1 Block and the Rotokautuku No. 2 Block to the Tapuwaeroa River; thence towards the south generally by the said Tapuwaeroa River to Whakatane County; and thence towards the west by the said Whakatane County to Cape Runaway aforesaid.

Awanui Riding.—Bounded towards the north-west by the Matakaoa Riding, hereinbefore described; towards the south-east by the sea; towards the south by the southern boundary-lines of the Ahikouka No. 2 and Kai Inanga Blocks respectively to the Waiapu River; and thence by a right line to the left bank of the said Waiapu River at the confluence of the Mangaoporo River with that river.

Piritarau Riding.—Bounded towards the north by the Matakaoa Riding and the Awanui Riding, hereinbefore described; towards the south-east by the sea; towards the south-west generally by the Waiorongomai, Akuaku, and Waihuka Blocks respectively, by Sections Nos. 1 and 3 of the Pahitaua Block, and by the Orua and Hauanu Blocks to the Mata River; thence by the left bank of the said Mata River to the confluence of the Mangapekapeka Stream with that river; thence by the said Mangapekapeka River to the south-western corner of the Taoroa Block; thence by a right line to Hikurangi Trig. Station; and thence towards the west by Whakatane County.

Waipiro Riding.—Bounded towards the north-east generally by the Piritarau Riding, hereinbefore described; towards the east generally by the sea; towards the south-west by the Tokomaru Blocks to the Onetehunga Stream; thence towards the south-east by the said Onetehunga Stream to Run No. 53, Tokomaru Survey District; thence again towards the south-west generally by the said Run No. 53, the Tuakau No. 1b Block, the Pirauau No. 1 Block, and Run No. 55 to the Mata River; thence again towards the east by the said Mata River to the confluence of the Whakoa Stream with the said Mata River; thence towards the south by the Huiarua Blocks to Whakatane County; and thence towards the north-west by Whakatane County.

Tokomaru Riding.—Bounded towards the north generally by the Waipiro Riding, hereinbefore described; towards the east by the sea; towards the south-west generally by Cook County; and towards the north-west by Whakatane County.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Right Honourable William Hillier, Earl of Onslow, of Onslow in the County of Salop; Viscount Cranley, of Cranley in the County of Surrey; Baron Onslow, of Onslow in the County of Salop, and of West Clandon in the County of Surrey; Baron Cranley, of Imbercourt; Baronet; Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George; Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at the Government House, at Wellington, this thirteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety.
