Notice to Mariners, No. 35 of 1890.

THE following Notice to Mariners, received from the
Portmaster, Brisbane, Queensland, is published for
general information.

MORETON BAY.—POSITION OF BLACK BUOY AT ENTRANCE
TO NORTH-WEST CHANNEL.

Notice is hereby given that a black buoy has been placed to
mark the northern extreme of the North-west Banks, and
lies in 8 fathoms at low-water springs, with the South-east
Glasshouse a little open to the southward of the beacon on
Bribie Island, and with the following compass bearings:
Caloundra Head, N. 19° W.; beacon on Bribie Island, S.
60° W.

The best line to enter the North-west Channel from sea-
wards will be found by keeping the beacon on Bribie Island
on with the southern end of the South-east Glasshouse, and
on entering the channel the buoy will be passed on the port
hand.

[TRANSLATION.]

"THE Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882," and
the Amendments thereof.

To each and every the owner or owners of Native land under
the said Act described in the valuation-rolls supplied to
the local bodies, the names of which are set forth in the
Schedule hereunder, under the provisions of the above
Acts and all other Acts affecting the same or relating
thereto.

WHEREAS demand having been made to me, the under-
signed Colonial Treasurer of the Colony of New Zealand, in
accordance with the provisions of "The Crown and Native
Lands Rating Act, 1882," by or on behalf of the said local
bodies, for payment of the rates appearing to be payable

under or by virtue of the said rolls for the year ending the
31st March, 1889 and 1890:

Notice is hereby given to you and each and every of you
that rolls of Native lands are now deposited at the offices of
the said several local bodies, which said rolls are in the
Maori language, and show the rateable value of the Native
lands therein mentioned or described.

And you and each and every of you, the owners of the said
lands, are hereby required and directed to pay the said rates
on or before the 7th October, 1890, such payment to be
made by you at the office of the local body in whose district
the lands affected are respectively comprised, and as noted
in the said Schedule.

Alterations and Additions to the Scale of Fares, Rates, and
Charges in force upon the New Zealand Railways.

THE New Zealand Railway Commissioners, in exercise
and pursuance of the powers conferred by "The
Government Railways Act, 1887," do hereby make the fol-
lowing alteration in and addition to the scale of fares, rates,
and charges on the New Zealand railways, to come into
force on and after the 29th day of September, 1890:—

PART IV.—LOCAL RATES.

NAPIER SECTION.

Goods of Class E, consigned to Napier or Spit, will be
charged at the classified rate.

Wool, undumped, from stations between Dannevirke and
Woodville inclusive, consigned to Spit, will be charged 6s. 4d.
a bale.

PART V.—CLASSIFICATION OF GOODS.

Mining machinery. Owners' risk. Special goods. Class D.

Te Makarini Scholarships, held at Te Aute College, Hawke's
Bay.

THREE scholarships of the yearly value of £35, tenable
for two years, are offered for competition. One of
these scholarships is open to all Maoris that have regularly
and continuously attended a Native school during the pre-
vious year, and are under sixteen years of age at the end of
the month preceding the date of the examination; the
other two scholarships are open to all Maoris that are under
fifteen years of age at the end of the month preceding the
date of the examination, and that have attended a Native
village school regularly and continuously during the previous
twelve months. These scholarships are offered for competi-
tion among Maori boys, on the conditions laid down in the
regulations of the Trustees of the Te Makarini Scholarships
Fund, as printed in the Native Schools Code, 1886, and in
the supplementary regulations that have been sent out to all
teachers. The examination will be held at convenient
centres on the 15th and 16th December, 1890.

Candidates must, either directly or through their teachers,
send notice to the Inspector of Native Schools, Education
Department, Wellington, of their intention to present them-
selves for examination. Such notice must be posted not
later than the 31st October next.

Copies of the regulations and forms of notice may be
obtained from teachers of Native schools and boarding insti-
tutions, the Secretaries to Education Boards, or the Secre-
tary for Education.
